1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a working mom from the Chicago-area who creates art in my spare time. dA is a family affair and several of my family members, including my husband are part of the site.
2. How did you discover deviantART, and what made you stay?
I had known about deviantART for years, primarily in my search for vectors, smilies and pixel-art. I even opened an account in the hopes of promoting my webcomic, but never used it.  It was actually my daughter, :devrandomyp

BRACE YOURSELFS, COMISSIONS ARE COMING! (sorry xD)So, I got some time to spare and I have currently no work besides the college.

All of my prices with examples are below.  I accept concealed cash or money orders via snail mail, as well as Paypal, but I will not turn down points either.  Commissions are worked on in the order that I received the payment.  Payment must be made up front.  You will be given a sketch of the work being done and that is the only time you can ask for changes.  When I work with traditional media, I cannot change anything once it is lined or coloured.
What information do you need for a commission or trade?
I need:

A bit of Help + All on the tableEdit: I saw MasterMindMan's Letters to Jane Doe project and wrote in.  He ended up giving me a featured article, which is absolutely touching.  I ask anyone who has had a less than perfect life to go read (or anyone who is curious).  But I also ask you guys not to treat me any differently; aside from the anxiety, the depression and the homosexuality (which to me is not an issue lol), everything in there is a good 5-10 years in the past.  Things are far from perfect but they have gotten better, which is the only point I was aiming for.  And that I am willing to listen and help if I can.  But yeah, I'm rambling.  Here's the article http://news.deviantart.com/article/142304/ /edit
My finances for university finally got sorted out, and I am short a ton of money for tuition.  I am job hunting, but so far it isn't getting many results.  So anything extra would be greatly appreciated.&

Project Comment InterviewsEvery month, we will be interviewing commenters and volunteers at ProjectComment, specifically revolving around their life on DeviantArt and, the purpose of ProjectComment, constructive comments.
We sincerely hope you enjoy reading the eighty-ninth interview of this series with TheDviousOne! If you have a spare moment, feel free to :+fav: the news article, too.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Welp, I go by Angie. I'm an aspiring artist, though I don't particularly have any idea what I wanna do with my art. But I do want a career in it and I'm always looking for ways to improve myself. I've also gotten a bit into writing and am currently working on a little story that my and my bf had sitting around, and I finally pushed myself to start on it so I can start developing some of my OCs.
What is it about DeviantArt that attracts you?

dA Staff Appreciation

dASAW 2012: This Year's Volunteers Are...I am very happy to announce this year's deviantART Staff Appreciation Week team of volunteers. These are the awesome deviants who will be collaborating until August to bring you a dASAW that you won't soon forget! :dummy:
I would like to cover a few things before I announce the selected deviants:
A total of 25 deviants applied for this year's dASAW! (every application was reviewed individually :D)In total, 68% of the applicants DID NOT help with last year's dASAW, while 32% did!If you are not selected, that does not mean you are excluded. There is limited space (10 spots) for volunteers, and unfortunately the decision is difficult when you need to cut 15 people. You will still be able to participate even if you are not a volunteer, and we might even ask you for your input or for some help later in the process! ;D
Thank you again! Here are our volunteers this year. :happybounce::happybounce:

dA The-DA-advice-line

welcome and 'advice journal 1'hey everyone,
so its all up and running and we have our first advice line submitted:
"I got really mad at my boyfriend over something petty. I shouldn't be mad at him but I let everything else go, so I guess all the idiotic things he has done pilled up. See the thing is that I don't know if I should remain mad until I cool off or try to get over it now. Also if I get over it now, I know that it's just going to build up again until I snap over something silly again. What do I do?"
my response:
"Its a perfectly natural response to just snap and little things just build and build and build. The best thing to do is just take a deep breath and step back, think about whats really making you mad, is it a combination of things he has done? Or is it something else in your life that has you on edge at the moment?
Try not to let everything else go, if there is something big that has annoyed you then let him know, solve those problems first, that way you won't be so frustrated at

I need your help to do it!
Thanks in advance for reading this entry! It's super appreciated!
I live in a very small, rural, low income area.
Every year the (tiny) school here does Operation Backpack.
This is a program that gives underprivileged students the materials
they need in school to succeed.
Operation Backpack provides children with school supplies
(pencils, paper etc.), backpacks, basic health screenings
(eyes, spine, height & weight) and pretty much anything else
school related that they have enough funds for. Last year a local church
donated gift cards to Payless shoe stores and each child
at the program received a much-needed new pair of shoes. :)
Operation Backpack also helps throughout the year with another HUGE
problem in this area. Shortages in our local food bank. Teachers discreetly
put packaged, child-friendly foods into low income children's backpacks while
they are at recess on Frida

Project Plushie needs YOUR SUPPORTI bet you're wondering why I've written this News Article. Well, the reason, simply put, is this:

Now, you're probably wondering why I put a picture of my Cute Monsters contest entry in a news article. The simple fact of it is that if I win, I'll use some of the prize money to buy stuffed toys for underprivileged children for Christmas. I will buy 10 Fella plushies and 10 Super Llama plushies to give to Toys for Tots for Christmas, and that's where I need your help. Obviously I can't vote for myself, and I'm trying to raise the money (via :points: ) to buy the plushies. If I don't get enough points by Christmas, and if I win the shirt competition, I'll buy the necessary amount of points left to buy the plushies. So if you want to do a kind deed, vote for my entry, donate points to me, or both. If you don't do either, I'll send the poor kids to you and then you can explain why they don't have a single toy under their tree on Christm

Earth Day: The Inspiration of the Natural World

by techgnotic
Since human beings harnessed the secret of fire the natural world has been seen by many
only in terms of how best it can be exploited of its abundant riches. It’s amazing now to
look upon the desert sands of the Arab lands and know that this place, the cradle of earliest
civilization, was once known as “The Fertile Crescent.” All Europe was once one great forest –
until all those trees were needed to create the naval armadas of dueling empires. Only the
Earth’s natural forces, like earthquakes, have been more destructive and wasteful than humanity.

This is great, yet amidst those opinions you're bound to get reactions that are nothing more than word pollution or troll bait. It's time for our next deviantWEAR Design Challenge, and this one is a little different. Writers, you play a crucial role! We're calling on deviants to create an original phrase, statement, or saying and transform these writings into an artistic and unique t-shirt design. Entries should display an imaginative phrase, expression, or statement as well as a beautiful presentation of the words in a "Design Typography" style.
We are not looking for famous quotes by historical figures, fictional characters, famous poets, and the like. Instead, we are excited to see designs and phrases in your very own words. So let your creative juices flow and share your inspiring words with the world! A picture tells a thousand words, but your typographical design for the "Original Quotes" entry will tell us even more!

deviantART HQ News

Art We Heart: SpringArt We ♥ is a hand-selected art feature, chosen by deviantART staff members, showcasing art we believe the community will enjoy.
:iconthesmallwonder: Some thoughts from Katie (thesmallwonder)
Spring has sprung and April showers have started raining down here at HQ.
Winter rain makes me want to crawl back into bed, get a hot cup of coco, and read a book all day. But there’s something different about April showers...
Maybe it’s because it’s less cold outside, or that the days are longer, but springtime rain makes me want to play in puddles.I want to go outside and smell the fresh air, and I just feel rejuvenated. Spring is a time for me to dust off old projects and start new ones. Forget New Years, April's when I get inspired!
I want to hear from you!
Do you play in the rain?
Does spring inspire you?

Update: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse:bulletgreen:  Fair Exposure and miscategorization
On January 24th, 2012, we released an hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results.  Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system.  Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results.  This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

Site Update: April 20, 2012In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

More Updates to the New Thumbnails Preview

Several weeks ago, we released a sneak peek of deviantART's new thumbnails. We've been making changes based on community responses, and today we've implemented a few more. In this updated version, the font, spacing, and colors of the text under the thumbs have been adjusted. Also, several members had concerns about the "frames" that were put around thumbs that were either extra tall, extra wide, or small images (such as emoticons and avatars). We've adjusted the visual display of these frames to make them less distract
New Ways to Receive Prints Profits! At deviantART, we're all about supporting artists any way we can. We do this is by giving our members a platform for displaying their art, tools to exchange comments and critiques, and avenues for finding new friends and mentors all over the world.
We also want to help artists by providing a place to sell their art, which we've done for years through our Prints program. Because the process of receiving payments from your art sales has been less than ideal, we've worked hard on a new earnings system. We've heard your feedback and suggestions, and want to give you a preview of three ways you will be able to receive profits from the Prints that you've sold. Check out these changes coming soon!

With our new program, we're adding ways to instantly receive payments, all of which will be found in the new and improved My Earnings page.

In the past, fan artists weren't able to submit .gif files (including animations) to the Fan Art Gallery, therefore having to submit their Fan Art in this format to other galleries.
However, this week things have changed and now you can submit .gif (animated or not) to Fan Art. This is great news because Fan Art in animated or static .gif form can be now submitted to the proper gallery.

As we're kind (and awesome), we also decided to give an opportunity to everybody to get featured! Every month, we'll create a thread in the Deviation Thumbshare Forum with a different theme. This thread will be made into a sticky for easy access. All you have to do is post thumbs from your gallery matching the theme and, at the end of the month, we'll select our favorite thumbs from that thread and feature them in the next news article :)
The best thing is that the only requirement is that you're an active member of the forums!

"It's not always easy to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the sufferings around one. - Robert Capa"
The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Photo-journalists much of the time take their lives into their own hands when they document the horrors of this

“Creative slump - the Photographers equivalent of drought."
Every so often (and for many of us it feels like everyday sometimes!) we fall into a creative slump. It's not a place that the bubbliest most inspiring of people can rise us from. It's a horrible place, where you feel like you'll never be able to recoup that creativity again. But then something changes and you climb back out, you keep drawing, or fractal-ing or taking photographs and you're happy again.
It's funny how when we're creatively over flowing and positively genius's we rarely look back and remember the time when we couldn't envisage being artistic ever again. But equally when we're down and grasping at straws to try and pull ourselves out - we forget the achievements we've made, the times we succeeded. Perhaps it's time to remember both feelings - one extreme to another - maybe that will provide the little lift or equally the littl

Hey guys!
On Sunday 1st July, I will be organising a devmeet in Amsterdam! Ever wanted to meet your fellow deviants? Join us on this (hopefully) sunny Sunday afternoon for a lunch, a babble and maybe artistic endeavours and dA goodies... :D if you can bring your camera, sketchbook, portfolio, whatever you have :eager:
We will meet at 1 pm at the Central Station (specifically, at the Hema next to the Starbucks, at the southern side where the west and mid tunnels under the platforms join), from where we'll walk to the Leids square to find a nice place to have lunch and hang out. I'm working on a plan B in case of bad weather.
Please comment if you'd like to come, and feel free to ask any questions :D
Cymae will even be flying over from New Zealand, so I'm co

it takes time"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me.
All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying to be good, it has potential, but it's not. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.
A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story.
It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I've ever met
Weekly Hunt #49Every Friday, there will be a 'Hunt' for either the Most or the Least of something or other. It's a weekly (hopefully) fun activity, open to all, that will get you scouring deviantART for the best possible piece that fits the 'Hunt'.
The person who suggests the best piece will get four of their art pieces featured on our page and, in return, the piece itself will also be featured on dAseniors' front page!
Two suggestions are allowed into this folder!
(It will be automatically approved, so make sure you submit wisely. :meditation:)

The Unlikely Friends and Time Machine OC Features!I think it is about time that I could and should change my journal skin (Okay, I do so frequently, but I mean my usual Luciana chibi one as much as I love it.) and change it to something a little more fancy and stylish like this one. What do you think? :la:
The header image above was one of my commissions by hachiyuki (sadly, it isn't in her gallery anymore but in storage) of Luciana, my original character from my novel projects and the skin is a modified version of Gasara's Sweet Vintage Journal Skin. Thank you so much for allowing us to modify it. :aww:
Anyway, this journal should be about features! As I promised, I will be featuring those who won in my Unlikely Friends OC Contest and CristianaLeone's

The Princess Nonomi Fan Art ContestHere's the official contest announcement. As of this post, the contest has begun and the deadline decided on. Read on to find out how long you have before submissions are closed and judging has begun.
For those just tuning in, XLPendergast had stirred the idea of throwing a contest after she made her own piece of fan art based on my book, Princess Nonomi, published through Damnation Books. It was then that I decided I wanted more.

The Princess Nonomi Fan Art Contest
You must be 18+ to enter the contest. The book itself is geared towards a mature demographic. It received the max ratings through Damnation Books for both violence and sexuality. It contains graphic depictions of both. Any entries by artists under the age of 18 will be automatically disqualified.

Deaf Artists~Two Sisters~Art History
Late-Deafend Adults.
The meaning of a Late-deafend Adult:
Late–deafened in general means deafness that happened any time after the development of speech and language.  Late-Deafend Adults are usually unable to understand speech without visual aids such as speech–reading, sign language, and/or Computer Aided Real–time Transcription (CART). The Late-Deafend Adult also may have lost their hearing suddenly or gradually as a result of inherited causes, accident, illness, medications, surgery and/or noise.

Frances and Mary Allen. Two Late-Deafend sisters.
Frances and Mary Allen had planned to devote their lives to the teaching in the classroom. However, hearing loss forced both to give up their dedication to classroom teaching.
In 1893, Frances and Mary traveled to Boston by train to be examined at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirma
Deaf Artists ~ Art HistoryThe ArtHistoryProject has grown from a Project into a Super-Group and is being recognized throughout deviantART. I am thrilled to participate and share with you a brief introduction to Deaf Artist. Over the next three days I will post articles regarding Historic Deaf Artist. I truly hope you enjoy reading and sharing the love of Art History.
I believe it is important to share with you a brief description of Deaf Culture. Deaf Culture describes the social beliefs, behaviors, art, literary traditions, history, values and learning centers of communities that are affected by deafness and use sign language tcommunicate. The word deaf is often written with a capital D, "big D, Deaf" in sign languages when being used culturally, when used in the medical field for the audiological co

A Brief History of TypographyA Brief History of Typography
A little insight into the history of not only Typography, but also of written language. This article will be far from covering it all, but focuses on highlighting some of the major events and periods in the history of Typography.
Typography
From the Greek roots τύπος typos = "impression" and -γραφία -graphia = "writing".
Cuneiform
~ 30th Century BC – 200 AD
Or "Script of Nails / Cuneiform Script" is probably the oldest form of written text. This calligraphic form of writing was carved into clay tablets.

The Latin Alphabet
~ 800 BC – present
This is the basic alphabet used in all Western languages. The Romans based it among others
Street Photography - The OriginsAs we all know from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding everything was invented by the Greeks. Well, ok we left some trivial things to be invented by the Chinese as well. What you may not know is that Street photography was also invented by the Greeks before Photography itself was even invented.
Seriously now:
Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment or "the supreme moment". The Greeks believed the concept of Kairos is achieved when such a moment is grasped for otherwise the moment is gone and cannot be re-captured.  According to ancient Greeks, Kairos was the god of the “fleeting moment.”
Interestingly the ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos. While chro

Abstract and Surreal DDs for AprilI think we're much smarter than we were.
Everybody knows that abstract art can be art,
and most people know that they may not like it,
even if they understand there's another purpose to it.

Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only
what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.

Word Wars Chat Tour Wrap Up
:iconLITplease:
Fourteenth Stop – LITplease
We returned to LITplease in honor of NaPoWriMo and ScriptFrenzy taking place this month. Plus, who doesn't like to take an opportunity to hang out in their chatroom? With a little over 20 participants, the event was more intimate for a Chat Tour stop, allowing participants time to really socialize. Despite spending half our time chatting we managed a collective total of 39,271 words!
However, Cecilia-vas-ilion was a serious business speed writer and reclaimed their record for most words written by an individual at a single stop! With a total of  6,789 words, they beat

Friday night Street Specials v4.3
A weekly selection amongst the images that were suggested as DDs
or simply impressed me and I think they deserve more attention.
Enjoy them, comment on them and remember to visit the photographers' galleries as well.
If you like what you see,  this article
so it can reach as many deviants as possible.

Have a nice weekend!
Friday night Street Specials v4.4Friday Night Street Specials
is an old idea of mine which has its roots in the The-Yard-Collective group, long before it was even a group. Older deviants remember the time when groups were clubs. I started posting this weekly feature back then, every Friday afternoon, showcasing 7 street shots that had been submitted to the club and had caught my attention during the past week. The feature lasted for a long time, untill I left dA  for personal reasons for few months. When I got back in dA and wore the Street CV hat, the idea of reviving this weekly feature came up again vividly. This time my intention was to showcase and promote street shots from all over deviantArt.
Till now, 22 FNSS have been posted, you can find them in my personal account profile page.  They average over 1000 pageviews each,  and as I've been told by several fellow street shooters, it's a feature worth waiting for, every Friday afternoon. In every FNSS

Interviews

Another dAmn Interview! - hanketsu1717Another dAmn Interview! is a new series I'm starting up where I interview a deviant who is regular in the dAmn/Chatroom area of deviantART, and ask them to share their initial and current opinions on that area of the site. Since this is a new series I'd love some suggestions from you about how it can be improved, and any other questions you think should be asked. Thank you!
1. When did you start using dAmn compared to how long you've been on dA?
I've been on dA for 4 years now and I have been using dAmn for about a year now :meow: I had made my own chatroom ages ago, but never used it really. It was just something I made since I was able to. I was busy exploring other aspects of dA and my chatroom was left behind :XD: I then attended some chat events and enjoyed talking to deviants in the chats.
2. Did you find yourself drawn to any chatrooms in particular when you first started using them?
Not really...I would go

:bulletyellow: Tell us what defines you as a person.
Willpower and endurance. Learnt from my mother and grandmother, who raised me together. One day, I hope that would be what people remember of me.
:bulletyellow: How did you found out about deviantART and why did you join the community?
I found it when I got my first real internet connection at 15. I was looking

This is a very to the point interview since the artist was afraid his english was not good, so he kept it short. Regardless, his words are strong and his art is extraordinary.

Fan Artist of the Month - May 2012"Following the tradition set by the lovely rydi1689 and carried on by the amazing CharityGuildmaster; TheCreativeJenn and myself have the pleasure to present our Fan Artist of the Month for May 2012! Cue drumroll, please!"
- alexandrasalas, Fan Art CV
Noktowl is not only one outstanding artist who thinks outside of the box with his Fan Art (seriously, who thought Psyduck could make a perfect 'The Scream' model?!), but he is also an amazing inspiration to everyone in the community by putting a smile to either a friend's face or a complete stranger's. A laugh included.

:bulletred: For how long have you contributed to the Fan Art Gallery?
I signed up under the name 'Noktowl' in January 2011. However, I started posting my artworks to gaming message boards since... 2005 I think.

How did you first discover deviantART?
:typerhappy: Just over two years ago, just a few months after I turned 13, a very close friend of mine introduced me to the site. Since then, I have grown both as an artist and as a deviant to love the interactions, community, and spirit that comes with deviantART.
What was it about dA that made you want to stay?
:typerhappy: When I first started, I really didn't understand the site at all, and it wasn't until one deviant, 11thDimensionPhoto, watched me that I really started to see the power of the community.
Until then, no other artists had really looked at what I posted or cared… But he did. He gave me feedback, suggestions, critiques, answered questions… You name it! That's what I love about this place. Professional and hobbyists who all love art are willing to take a few minutes and actually talk to you, give you suggestions, and allow the

Get the new Gallery CSS thumbnail ClassesHi guys,
As you might have noticed the messed up gallery in your profile or while browsing DA now, its due to the change in codes by deviantart.
I've uploaded the set of new classes that are used for customizing your gallery thumbnails. So, for all those CSS coders check it out and revert back if you have any queries.

Ah ha- found it!
Veeeery thorough article. I thought this was going to be just a little article, but this group and its news seem super organized and wonderfully helpful! Definitely will be poring through the other features you've added here.
