Hello Members, Watchers, Affiliates & Visitors,

Welcome to DevNews 7th Edition of Bi-Monthly News Articles!! We would appreciate you taking a moment to add your comments/suggestions and favorite this journal to your collection, this will help us improve and be found by more deviants searching for quality news within deviantART.

Last month DevNews posted a poll asking our watchers if they wanted us to collect and post
commission information, as of this writing here are the results:

36  deviants = 42% said  YES...YES... YES :la: :la: :la:

30  deviants = 35% said   Commissions

16  deviants = 19% said NO...

3  deviants = 4% said What's a commission???

As you can see above those who answered the poll are in favor of DevNews collecting and posting commission information. So, we are doing a test run in this issue and would like to know if you would like us to continue to collect and post commission information.

A bit of Help + All on the tableEdit: I saw MasterMindMan's Letters to Jane Doe project and wrote in.  He ended up giving me a featured article, which is absolutely touching.  I ask anyone who has had a less than perfect life to go read (or anyone who is curious).  But I also ask you guys not to treat me any differently; aside from the anxiety, the depression and the homosexuality (which to me is not an issue lol), everything in there is a good 5-10 years in the past.  Things are far from perfect but they have gotten better, which is the only point I was aiming for.  And that I am willing to listen and help if I can.  But yeah, I'm rambling.  Here's the article http://news.deviantart.com/article/142304/ /edit
My finances for university finally got sorted out, and I am short a ton of money for tuition.  I am job hunting, but so far it isn't getting many results.  So anything extra would be greatly appreciated.&

dASAW 2012: This Year's Volunteers Are...I am very happy to announce this year's deviantART Staff Appreciation Week team of volunteers. These are the awesome deviants who will be collaborating until August to bring you a dASAW that you won't soon forget! :dummy:
I would like to cover a few things before I announce the selected deviants:
A total of 25 deviants applied for this year's dASAW! (every application was reviewed individually :D)In total, 68% of the applicants DID NOT help with last year's dASAW, while 32% did!If you are not selected, that does not mean you are excluded. There is limited space (10 spots) for volunteers, and unfortunately the decision is difficult when you need to cut 15 people. You will still be able to participate even if you are not a volunteer, and we might even ask you for your input or for some help later in the process! ;D
Thank you again! Here are our volunteers this year. :happybounce::happybounce:

welcome and 'advice journal 1'hey everyone,
so its all up and running and we have our first advice line submitted:
"I got really mad at my boyfriend over something petty. I shouldn't be mad at him but I let everything else go, so I guess all the idiotic things he has done pilled up. See the thing is that I don't know if I should remain mad until I cool off or try to get over it now. Also if I get over it now, I know that it's just going to build up again until I snap over something silly again. What do I do?"
my response:
"Its a perfectly natural response to just snap and little things just build and build and build. The best thing to do is just take a deep breath and step back, think about whats really making you mad, is it a combination of things he has done? Or is it something else in your life that has you on edge at the moment?
Try not to let everything else go, if there is something big that has annoyed you then let him know, solve those problems first, that way you won't be so frustrated at

I had the privilege of being very close with my grandmother and I will forever remember her as an extremely strong, independent and vibrant woman.

Project Plushie needs YOUR SUPPORTI bet you're wondering why I've written this News Article. Well, the reason, simply put, is this:

Now, you're probably wondering why I put a picture of my Cute Monsters contest entry in a news article. The simple fact of it is that if I win, I'll use some of the prize money to buy stuffed toys for underprivileged children for Christmas. I will buy 10 Fella plushies and 10 Super Llama plushies to give to Toys for Tots for Christmas, and that's where I need your help. Obviously I can't vote for myself, and I'm trying to raise the money (via :points: ) to buy the plushies. If I don't get enough points by Christmas, and if I win the shirt competition, I'll buy the necessary amount of points left to buy the plushies. So if you want to do a kind deed, vote for my entry, donate points to me, or both. If you don't do either, I'll send the poor kids to you and then you can explain why they don't have a single toy under their tree on Christm

Search for draw this again and you see a meme where deviants are showing their progress through the years. Examples:

Then there's a trend on YouTube where deviants are posting video blogs about their deviantART experiences. I recently caught this one by DomieNeek that I was charmed by. She makes great points, too!
In November we published a Journal on dt's Blog, very discreetly announcing that we've launched a set of API's (Application Programming Interfaces) so that developers out there could make Apps for deviantART.

Status Forum ConcernsHi Everyone!
I wanted to thank everyone for the responses on MidnightExigent’s Blog Pro Tip: Don’t Wait to Report a Problem. There was quite few concerns about the state of our Status forum and we are working to address this because it is most definitely a valid concern and we greatly appreciate those who brought this to our attention!
For quite some time we tried to reserve the Status Forum to the most urgent issues which resulted in parts of the site being completely unusable resulting in high counts of tickets and concerns, to make sure that everyone was made aware of the issue as quickly as possible. By doing this the Status Forum remained quite small due to these types of issues not coming up as frequently and when they do the deviousTechnology department is sometimes so fast the issue gets fixed before we get to press the “Add Article

This is a small update on what's going on around the literature community, that's what this business is. The idea is to try and make the community more readily accessible for everyone, whether you're new or have been here for a while.
Please note: these updates will not be all-encompassing in terms of community happenings, as the community is quite frankly rather large. Instead, this article will focus specifically on things that are currently ongoing, or happened within the past fortnight. The Stars of dAr - `Mirz123The Stars of dAr is a series where I interview one member of the deviantART Related (dAr) community each time, about personal and dA related matters. For today we have Mirz123! She creates fantasic stamps, sometimes fun and silly, but also often with an important and profound message, and always in her recognisable style. She's also an enthusiastic community member in many aspects, and can be found in many corners of the community. But enough about her from me - I'll hand the floor to Mirz herself :eager:

Gallery Description ProjectMost of you probably are aware that deviantART has a lot of categories. As you've seen over the past few months, we volunteers, in coordination with moonbeam13, often help to orchestrate various changes in category structure in order to make the submission and browsing experiences simpler and more advantageous for the community.
That said, there's another aspect of categories which, sadly, often have been overlooked. I'm referring to the Gallery Descriptions. Over time, gallery descriptions have fallen into disarray, leaving many categories with old and outdated descriptions, others with incorrect descriptions, and yet others without a description at all.
At the moment, gallery descriptions are most prominent when submitting new deviations. However, as part of this project, we hope that they will become more evident as you browse the site. One of our goals is to make a simple, navigable category structure focusing on descriptions that are clear, concise, and consistent.

Photomanipulation: Voices of ExperienceHello, deviantART!
As the Community Volunteer for Photomanipulation, it will be my honor over the coming months to share the community I serve with you all and to show you the vast diversity, expertise, and creativity that defines us as artists.
Tonight I wanted to share some voices of experience with you all. The individuals I have chosen to interview for this piece have all been a part dA for at least five years. They have all been leaders in the photomanipulation community by setting high standards of quality through their exquisite works, by being involved in the community, and by setting a positive example for us all to admire.

A Word About deviantARTThe internet can be a terrible distraction when what you mean to do is get up, uncap those tubes of paint, and do your best to commit the image that's behind your eyes to some vague approximation on canvas.
Art takes time-- time to scale your own wilderness, sometimes in the dark-- and the internet has a way of leaching every last hour from the day before you've even noticed it's gone.
Then, one day, you stumble on to dA, and there they are: your actual peers, throughout the world, all striving for the same things you've been striving for; some are offering sage advice, some are heaping abuse wherever it will land, and a few are just killing time-- but mostly, you'll find artists engaged from both the right and left sides of their brains in the full-time obsession of art.
We're told that the left side of the brain is where language and logic abide, and the right side is where imagery and intuition brew, and for artists, the trick throughout their lives will be to reconcile the

Q ~ Hello Kaz-D Thank you for taking the time to represent projecteducate today. Please tell us how you found deviantART and what is your artistic medium?
A ~ I can't even remember how I found deviantart it was that long ago! I think a friend in the USA introduced me, her school was actually using it as part of art classes. My main artistic mediums are Photography and writing - I love both equally.
Q ~ What is your roll as an Admin of projecteducate
A ~ I'm a community volunteer and along with ikazon shuttermonkey & kinipelahh we've sort of taken on the roles of looking after projecteducate since september last year. It just means that we help out other volunteers when it comes to their week and just in general moderate the group and make sure everything is ticking over nicely.
Project Educate: AssemblageHello and welcome to Project Educate! Today we will be focusing on assemblage. The term "assemblage" is credited to artist Jean Dubuffet and it refers to work that incorporates everyday/found objects that are not generally thought of as art materials. The incorporated objects can retain some of their original intent, while picking up a symbolic meaning in the artwork. Assemblage pieces can be 2D or 3D and also fit into the mix media, collage, and sculpture categories.

Groups Needing Administration Assistance
Hairac is in the building phase of a group focused on constructive feedback (comment, critiques and also red-lining) if you're interested and a VERY active commenter drop me a note and I'll explain what I'm looking for.

Looking for contributorsI'm looking for someone to add as a contributor to help me get through submissions more quickly.  I've been going through a lot of stuff the past few weeks and my time with my groups has declined a bit.
Basically, you have to be very active on dA, fairly active in the group, able to follow directions and understand the submission guidelines of the group.  Tell me what you want to do with the group and why you are qualified.
I'm just looking for one person, but if there are two of you that I think will be great assets to the group, I will take two.  ^_^

Contest: New rule and more prizes!!!Hello everyone!
As you probably just read, the PortraitClub :iconportraitclub: will be holding a contest! We have some fabulous prizes to win: features, points :points:, and even some premium subscriptions :devart:! :la: For those of you interested please read on further for the contest's theme!
CONTEST THEME
The theme for this contest will be "Remember Me". We leave it up to you, the artists, to decide what this phrase means to you! There are several different approaches you can take, but if you're stuck, here are a couple ideas you might consider:
-A portrait so outrageous or bizarre it cannot be forgotten
-A sentimental portrait of someone you'd like to be remembered
Now remeber, as we are the Portrait Club, the entries must be portraits! However, you can submit portraits of any medium (except literature)! Whether you're a photographer, a traditional artist, or a digital artist, we welcome you to submit to our contest! Please read on though for the rules!

Unlikely Friends OC Contest Winners!Hello everyone! After two months my Unlikely Friends OC Contest has finally come to a close, with so many great, creative and well thought out entries I was left overwhelmed and in love by the talent and ideas put forward into each and every one of the twelve entries. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy placing them in the first, second and third places but hopefully I made the right decisions.  Whilst some touched my heart, others made me laugh.  I hope everyone had fun whilst creating and I thank you for participating in my first ever contest.  To review the contest entries check them out in this gallery folder at LoreithianChronicles! :)
Now on to seeing who are the first three winners!

Thirteenth Stop – Written-Imagination
Our first late night (for EST timezone people) had quite a showing in the first hour with over 40 participants and about a dozen visitors. Even though the night slowed down, as deviants went to bed or work, the stop still boasted an impressive collective total of 61,356 words! Excellent job to those of you who stopped in for a round to two.
Our speedy writers all had incredibly close scores and it was anyone's game for a while. SpottedJay managed to pull ahead with over a 200 word count lead! Overall we had a productive night with loads of writing, some quick rounds, and bunches of prizes.

#SixWordStories: Monthly ShowcaseA type of Flash Fiction, six word stories are (very) short stories with an exact word count: six words. SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. Though these stories are so brief in length, they can be as profound, if not more, than the prose and poetry you see and read every day, partly because six word stories can tell us so much and yet contain so little.
In our feature articles, we will be showcasing six word stories submitted to Freestyle folder.

MORE ABOUT FILMHi future film fans!
Last time we featured some beautiful cameras to get started with film photography, so if you wanna take the next step, why not develop films yourself!? There are loads of how-to's in the internet, so we thought we'd just add a little help with our 11 developing rules for beginners.
1st rule: Relax, keep calm...
2nd rule: Keep your working space clean, also while working, always keep developer and fixer separate, no eating, drinking, smoking in the darkroom, keep your hands clean.
3rd rule: Work accurately, always make sure you keep to the correct temperatures, stick to developing times, otherwise you don‘t know what to change when mistakes happen.
4th rule: If possible, use one-shot developers, they are easier to work with and more precise.
5th rule: Inverting means moving the tank slowly, not shaking it frantically. Gently invert the tank and revert it back - that‘s fine.
6th rule: Mark your fixer every time you have used it - change after 10 uses. T

Masters of Photography part IJosef Koudelka
Josef Koudelka was born in 1938 in Czechoslovakia. He began photographing his family and the surroundings. He staged his first photographic exhibition in 1961. He began taking commissions from theatre magazines, and regularly photographed stage productions at Prague's Theatre. In 1971 he joined Magnum Photos. (Wikipedia)
Quote: "The maximum, that is what has always interested me."
Masters of Photography part IIWilliam Eugene Smith (December 30, 1918 – October 15, 1978) was an American photojournalist known for his refusal to compromise professional standards and his brutally vivid World War II photographs.
He began his career by taking pictures for two local newspapers. He moved to New York City and began work for Newsweek and became known for his incessant perfectionism and thorny personality. Smith was fired from Newsweek for refusing to use medium format cameras and joined Life Magazine in 1939. He soon resigned from Life, too. Smith joined the Magnum photo agency in 1955. There he started his project to document Pittsburgh. This project was supposed to take him three weeks, but spanned three years and tens of thousands of negatives. It was too large to ever be shown, although a series of book-length photo essays were eventually produced.
In January 1972, Smith was attacked by Chisso employees near Tokyo, in an attempt to stop him from further publi
Masters of Photography part IIIElliott Erwitt (b. 26 July 1928 Paris, France) is an advertising and documentary photographer known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings.
Erwitt studied photography and filmmaking at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research, finishing his education in 1950.
Erwitt served as a photographer's assistant in the 1950s in the United States Army while stationed in France and Germany. Erwitt was influenced by his meeting the famous photographers, Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker. Stryker, the former Director of the Farm Security Administration's photography department, hired Erwitt to work on a photography project for the Standard Oil Company. Erwitt then began a freelance photographer career and produced work for Collier's, Look, Life and Holiday. Joining the Magnum Photos agency in 1953 allowed Erwitt to shoot photography projects around the world. (Wikipedia)

Interviews
The Stars of dAr - `Mirz123The Stars of dAr is a series where I interview one member of the deviantART Related (dAr) community each time, about personal and dA related matters. For today we have Mirz123! She creates fantasic stamps, sometimes fun and silly, but also often with an important and profound message, and always in her recognisable style. She's also an enthusiastic community member in many aspects, and can be found in many corners of the community. But enough about her from me - I'll hand the floor to Mirz herself :eager:
Hi Mirz123, thanks for agreeing to be interviewed :happybounce:
- Please tell us something about yourself!
By day I'm a mom who works as a secretary. By night, I don a cape and create emoticons, stamps, and write Lit.  Though, looking at my gallery stats, I'm most-known for my stamps.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
It's a bit hard to describe myself well due to my personality being so mixed and my lack of a "way with words", but I'll try. I'm a really friendly, nerdy, lazy American teenager who draws dinky cartoons. I'd like to be a fashion designer when I finish school, which won't be for quite a while. T

1) First off zio-san, can you tell us a little bit about yourself!
There is nothing much to say, really! I'm a deviant just like any other.
Actually I work in photography;  but also I enjoy drawing, so when I decided to learn it, a jump into deviantArt was my next logical step!
I've known dA since 2000, but I decided to make this dedicated acc for drawing last year.
2) When did you first discover dAmn, and can you remember the first room you ever chatted in?
I remember I was searching for a room to share art and to get suggestions, but there wasn't one.
You see, I like comics and love drawing in general, so I asked for some advice in this field.

projecteducate Founder Kaz-D
Interviewed by JamminJo

How did you first discover deviantART?
