The home of the committee for planning the deviantART Staff Appreciation Week
of 2012! We aim to strengthen community ties to staff, and to show them
that we appreciate their time, effort, and dedication!
Welcome to the 2012 dASAW! [Updated]Welcome to the 2012 deviantART Staff Appreciation Week!

Hello everyone, and welcome to our second annual deviantART Staff Appreciation Week! We hope that you're as excited as we are to kick off a 7-day-long celebration of deviantART and the people who make it run smoothly for us!
For this week of contests, projects, love, points, prizes, more love, and devious shenanigans, our team of volunteers has worked very hard to organize many ways of telling the staff of deviantART, rather simply, "THANK YOU!"
So, without further ado, let's take a look at our schedule of events! If you are interested in seeing what's happening during the dASAW, you can refer to this journal! We will link to all of our pertinent news articles and post the dates of our contests and projects here!
Don't forget to wish the deviantART staff a happy dASAW! :iconeeeeeplz:

muroWARZ Redux

Hello from StaffAppreciation! :happybounce: One of the most fun activities from last year (originally inspired by EastSideSunsets) has returned for round 2: muroWARZ! Whether or not you participated last year, we're sure this'll still be fun for you! If you are unfamiliar with last year's muroWARZ, take a look
The Challenge
In this project, you'll use deviantART Muro and deviantART's commenting system to leave a staff member of your choice a picture reminiscent of them! It can be anything: their avatar, something from their profile, or something that you think will make them scream in happiness!

Devious Depictions

Hello from StaffAppreciation! :happybounce: As part of our deviantART Staff Appreciation Week 2012, we bring you a contest for artists of all skill levels and specialties! No matter your medium, all deviants are welcome to join this contest to show their appreciation to the $taff of deviantART and win fantastic prizes at the same time!
The Theme
As with all of our festivities the theme of this contest is to show appreciation to the staff members of deviantART. However, your challenge this time is to create a piece of art that represents a staff member based on what you know about him/her or what you can find on his/her profile! Your art can be ANYTHING: a statue, a painting, an emote, a stamp, a comic, really ANYTHING! :happybounce:
The Rules
You must follow these rules in order to qualify for first, second, or third place! We encoura
Congrats to IceXDragon!Congrats to IceXDragon!

Some time ago, we announced our Idea Contest, and we were very happy with the number of entries we received! After a long period of judging, we're happy to announce that IceXDragon's idea was chosen to be used during one of our chat events!
Here is the idea:
Guess that $taff member! This would be a chat game, and the host would give a fact about any $taff member, and the participants have to guess the $taff member linked to the fact! c:

dASAW Interview Series: codenamepanther
Welcome to the second Staff Member interview of deviantART Staff Appreciation Week! As part of my role in dASAW, I had the pleasure of interviewing the fabulous, codenamepanther. Enjoy! :dalove:
:megaphone: 1. How did you discover deviantART, and what made you stay?
I discovered deviantART back in the day when Heidi introduced it to me. Essentially, I have known about it since it started, but I didn't join until about 3 years ago. I think the passion of the community and the amazing work I see on a daily basis has made me stay.
:megaphone: 2. Tell us the story behind your username and/or prior dA accounts.
This one is actually asked a ton. I don't have a prior account. This is my main account at this time. I have others that are used for testing things, but they are not really that exciting. codenamepanther was kind of made up out of now

Deviousness Award, August 2012

Deviousness Award Interview with ThiefoworldWhat is this Awesome Achievement?
The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out
on the 1st of every month to one truly outstanding deviant.
The Deviousness Award for August2012 goes to Thiefoworld.
Thank you so much to Oughter for conducting this interview!

So, Don Jon, would you like to tell the world who you are and the things you do IRL and stuff?
Hi! My name is Jonathan but everybody calls me Thiefo, yeah even IRL. I'm a Graphic Designer doing some marketing work for a living. I also do some freelance work as illustrator. I've had the opportunity to work on some independent projects, children's books, mascots and a little concept art.

A small F.A.Q.Hello dear person who is reading this.
I guess is because lately a lot of new people is visiting me (hi guys! :D) but there are some questions I've been asked a lot lately. A LOT. And even when it doesn't bother me at all to answer these everytime, I figured out I could just make a little journal so hopefully people will look at this before asking (one can dream right? :P)
Why are you a premium member "'till hell freezes over"? How did you obtain such thing?
Staff members and volunteers get a permanent Premium Membership. I was a Community Volunteer a few years ago (a Gallery Moderator as they used to be called then). Said PM remains even when one steps down, hence why I have this status.
As a trivia fact, they're not really endless, they just last for maaany many years ;)
Who made your icon? I've seen others similar before, is there a base of some sort?
My icon was made fo
About hackers on DA and what you can do"Hacker alerts" are pretty common around DA and it has been for a long time. Journals warning you that there is a hacker loose at DA and will hack your account if you don't copy the journal and re-post it.
Some variations can be: "There is a hacker that will block all your friends, leave nasty comments on other's profiles, will deactivate your account, will get you in trouble with the staff, etc." another could be "Don't watch *insert deviant's name here* because they will give you a virus if you do" there are a lot more variations, but you get the idea. These journals always end with something like "If you read this warning, spread the word and share it with your friends so they won't be the hacker's next victim!"
I know, reading something like this can make you feel terrified and you might feel compelled to spread the word, you don't want you friends to be victims of this terrible hacker!
People re-post these journals with good intentions, trying to warn others about this alleged hac

New deviantART Thumbnails - Thumb GridHello again, everyone!
Back in April we launched the new deviantART thumbnails to beta. Over the last few months we've received a great deal of feedback from the community on them. We're always working to ensure that we put out products that are best for our community, and so today we'd like to announce some new options being added to these thumbnails to give you the best browsing experience.
A Recap

Very quickly, we'd like to recap what the New Thumbnails are, and the feedback we've received on them. We made the decision to change our thumbnails based on a multitude of factors. While the smaller thumbnails did their job, there's always a great deal of room for improvement as we move toward the future and look for better ways to present your art to the deviantART community, and the world.
To further this, we increased the size of the

dA-Dictionary

Dictionary Entries: 27We have new people on staff! That's right, give a warm welcome to the four new people who will be helping out! bradleysays, Katy-L-Wood, Xadrea, and Tifa22 will be helping myself and namenotrequired post the dictionary entries. Hopefully this means that we'll be able to stay on track with updates once a week (at least every two weeks). It's definately a load off my mind! It also feels amazing that something I started on a whim has grown to be this big. That's your doing!
The birthday celebrations last week were amazing with high participation from everyone. Can't wait until next year's when dA is officially old enough to be on the internet and no longer a COPPA violation!
Other than that, there's nothing really going on with the dictionary. I (personally) am collecting points again to use for prizes in contests and for random donations. The birthday celebrations cleaned

Did you know that everyone on deviantART can organise a project? :eager: Some examples of current projects can be found here. Do you want to raise awareness for a cause? Start a contest or group? Make people participate in something fun and artistic? Make it happen!
Now, you can do this all on your own - but the dA staff and volunteers are here to help you with it, too :) This is a major part of my role as Volunteer for Community Projects, in particular. So if you would like some help, please send me, namenotrequired, a note!
Not sure how to organise it? Want some more exposure

Tea, apart from doing a lot of work for the Shelter Project, an outside DA activity (telling us a lot about her type of personality), is totally UNSTOPABLE... This lady is a BIG soul always helping deviants, encouraging people and giving a hand to ALL AND SUNDRY!!!! I am sure her wonderful "hands and heart" have touched a lot of lives, both at a personal level but also artistically.... Tea is a powerful force in many groups like dAWishingWell, DevNews and right here at deviantHEART! Personally, I love a cute fuzzy tarantula, but I am sure more of you will find kitties and puppies super cute and furry! So go out there and find some furry friends to share with us and link the deviation in a comment on this blog! One deviation per member please. Each submitted deviation will be added to our gallery! Make a Difference

Make a Difference #171Artists join deviantART to share their art and appreciate others. Due to the many artists out there, it's easy to get towed under and generally obscured from the public.
Make a Difference aims to do exactly that. This series of articles will hopefully make a difference to you as well as the artists featured weekly. Just by giving one minute of your time to write constructive comments, favourites and even watches will make a difference to these artists.

Origami CommissionsHello my friends!
I've been meaning to post this journal for a while but have only got to it now. Just to let you know that I am up for COMMISSIONS. Whether you would like something that you've seen in my gallery, or would like to request some exotic origami creation as a decoration/gift/way to give me grey hairs, just shoot me a note and I'll see what I can do.
To date, I have been commissioned to fold:
1) 7 miniature cranes for a to-scale dolls' house
2) A replica wedding bouquet

3) 39 golden animals for a wedding reception
4) A dinky peacock for a university friend
I only do origami commissions and accept payment through PayPal but everything else is negotiable. (Also, am willing to mail stuff to ya wherever you're at, but expect it to cost an arm and a leg if you live in Antarctica. :B)
SO HIT ME. :eager:

Johnny Briz One Note and need for CommissionsOver the weekend, I've jotted down so many notes and haggled some with friends that I decided that Stash isn't going to cut it in keeping them all together.  For that, I fire up the preview of Office 2013 and set up a One Note on Skydrive.  You can view it at this https://skydrive.live.com/redir?page=view&resid=88A38FEDE2455833!175&authkey=!ANel7e7mygwk88Q
I thank Meiou, Badger, and a couple other firends with haggling, but I still need an artist for me to work with on the project.  I've sent notes and comments all over DA and elsewhere looking for someone who would work with me, but it's either too soon or I'm hearing too much of my Inner Retard.  If anyone's interested, please let me know.
Also, I desparately need someone to comission a work from me this week.  Got broke a bit too unexpectedly over the weekend and I have some expenses coming down to the end of the month.  Any and all paying request will be apprecaited.

This is the code: <da:embed profile="video type" id="ID of the video"/>
Replace video type with...
"film" for DeviantART Film
"vimeo" for Vimeo videos
"youtube" for YouTube videos
Also, replace ID of the video with the video ID. For example, on a YouTube video, the ID would be the alphanumeric part at the end of the link.
Example:
<da:embed profile="youtube" id="vE8ktfRZ0FE"/> will become...
As a final note, if the video is set for no sharing, the video will not work.

Jack Kirby
Jack Kirby was born Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28th, 1917 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. He was a comic book artist, writer, and editor; one of the most innovative and influential creators in the history of comics.
Growing up poor in New York City, Jacob Kurtzberg entered the newly emerging comics industry in the 1930s. He drew various comics features under different pen names, finally settling on Jack Kirby. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. During the 1940s, Kirby, often collaborating with Simon, created numerous characters for that company and also for the company that would become DC Comics.

Kirby eventually found himself at Timely's 1950s incarnation, Atlas Comics, later to be known as Marvel Comics. There, in the 1960s, he and writer-editor Stan Lee co-created many o

Disney-Parkhoppers Big Picture Contest - Last CallThe Big Picture Contest
:new: Last call for entries!  Voting will start on Monday the third, so if you want to enter get your entry in now!
Time for a new contest! This time we'll be looking for entries that show the Big Picture at the parks.
What does that mean? Well, it's the view you get when you step back. I've only been to Walt Disney World, and I often wonder about what things look like at the other parks. I've got a good idea of what individual attractions look like, but not how lands are laid out, or the order of parade floats, or how things fit into their surroundings.  The gallery here is full of all the details, but not the big picture.
For examples, see our entries!
The Rules
1. Entries must showcase the Big Picture theme and be related to the parks in some way.  We will reject close-ups or deviations that focus on one attraction/character/store/etc., so be sure your entry meets the contest's requirements.
2. Any type of Medium is welcome.

Bring Your Type to Life - A Typography ContestIt is time for another Typography contest! The theme of this contest will be…
Bring your Type to Life
This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.
Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!
What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. This contest has a more visual approach, so you will not be judged on the creativity of the meaning you choose to give to the letters. However, don't rush it! Even one letter can appear completely different than another. Be wise with the letters, word

- Photomanip Contest -Bravery
Start Date: June 26, 2012
End Date: September 15, 2012
Theme: Bravery
Your mission is to create a manipulation that somehow expresses bravery. You will not be given anymore information than that. How you choose to portray it is up to you and only you!
Judging: This contest will be judged by me. I will not accept other judging offers.
I will not be judging by personal preference nor will I choose any "friend" to win. I will be judging based on technique, originality, and effort. I will not go easy on you if you are a beginner, your art will be judged just as fairly as the others.
Rules
Sorry guys, I guess I should have added this earlier, but I was being pressured to get off the computer.
> Manipulations only
> Slapping a filter over an image is not acceptable. You must use multiple images
> Any animal may be the subject (I don't care if its a friggin okapi, as long as it fits the theme)

Another Contest! With our first contest finished, I think this club is starting to get back into the swing of things.  With the winner away on "I don't want to do every part of this myself" leave, Katze316 has been given the opportunity to choose the next contest.  His choice follows, in his own words.
"Sci-Fi vehicles. Not necessarily real ones, like X-Wings and DeLoreans, they can come from your imagination. Some examples would be flying cars, spaceships, mecha, and all other funky-lookin' forms of transport. That should be interesting, provided we get more applications this time :XD:
I WANT YOU
:iconunclesamplz:
TO BUILD SOMETHING!"
Same rules apply as last time: It must be built out of only Lego bricks and Lego products. (eg. stickers made by Lego are not bricks, but they're okay.  Stickers, or anything else, not made by Lego are not okay.)
As before, please submit your creation as a note with a link to it.  If you have any questions, please ask away.

"One Signature is worth a thousand implied tones..."
-Charles Swan -
Copyright Expert

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what
Infrared Photography Gallery: Your Thoughts? For some time now there have been calls from the community for an Infrared Gallery as it's becoming a popular technique and often there is confusion over where the work actually belongs. The powers that be have been listening and have decided that it would be really useful to have your feedback as to where this Gallery should go. At the moment, Infrared Photographs are spread across the Photography Galleries from Animals, Plants and Nature to Miscellaneous.
What is Infrared Photography?
gilad explained it quite succinctly over seven years ago now in this journal. Infrared Photography (or IR) shows a magical, thermal type effect of a world that, without specific filters or applications, appears quite normal. It can be achieved using a filter on specific D-SLR cameras or it can be achieved with special films in Analog. This clear technique divi

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”
-William Shakespeare

Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy georgewjohnson's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

Aspect Ratio, Composition, Present and FuturePhotography is simply a technology that allows you to record a moment in time, in a box that simply captures a moment of light. Simple and basic as that, no myth there.
But the decision on how to capture that moment and its variables like composition, time and subject matter remain in the hands of photographer.
Let's talk about that box, how it affects composition, and the time we live in. Photographic technology has developed at a rapid pace. From the 19th century's cumbersome daguerreotypes to today's compact digital cameras,  photography has become one of the most accessible art mediums, but more related to motion pictures that we might think, being at the same time influence and influenced by each other.

The original aspect ratio used by the motion picture was industry was 4:3, or ratio down to 1.33:1, or just 1.33.  Theories why vary from from Euclid's famous Greek "Golden Section", a shape of approximately 1.6, to a shape that simply saved m

When was the last time a random passenger in a bus made your jaw drop?
Happens with me all the time!
Whenever I go out into the streets, I never plan on what I'm going to shoot, nor do I have a particular theme in mind.
Mind you, planning ahead is highly benefical to a Street Photographer or any photographer for that matter - a practice that almost always yeilds excellent results when properly utilized.
For me, it's just the sheer excitment of stepping into a vast concrete jungle, unsure about what's around the next corner, or perceiving an event that is about to unfold before you, the sound of your heart beating as you walk/run towards the developing scene - all the while hoping that you get there in time to take... that one shot, that ultimate payoff; is all that matters.
Sometimes you could be standing there observing a street scene when you begin to notice things falling into place; a photo opportunity forming right before your very eyes.

Cole Trickle, The Best Street Photography TeacherStreet photography is gaining popularity with each passing day.  It seems with each passing month, more and more photographers are attempting to try their hand at it.   Starting out in street photography can be an overwhelming venture. There is so much to learn when starting out and the internet can often be a daunting place for those starting out in street photography to go for advice.
I am often asked advice on starting out in street photographer, and so I thought I would put together a small series on Street Photography for Beginners.  Now I am no expert or master street photographer, so nothing really qualifies me to put together a series on street photography for beginners other than it is process I followed to learn and practice street photography myself.
I like to look at learning street photography along the same progression Cole Trickle takes in the movie Days of Thunder.
When he first shows up at the track he doesn't

The Pixel Art CommunityWelcome to Pixel Art’s PE week! Firstly, I’d like to begin by discussing where we are in the Pixel Art community, where we came from and where we might head in the future.

Why discuss the definition of Pixel Art?
Why is it so important to discuss the definition of Pixel Art? It becomes important not only when it comes time to update the category’s description for the sake of organisation and clarity, but also when confusion and misconceptions become increasingly common among those in the community itself. As Pixel Art grew from being primarily used for old computer and gaming systems, that could not handle much data and therefore not too many colours per palette, into something used with more contemporary technologies like Photoshop and MSPaint, Pixel Art itself was bound to reflect those changes. This change has become apparent in new styles, new techniques and questions around the need for the “old rules” of past

PE: Pixel Art TutorialsSo you have discovered the wonderful world of pixel art and want to create your own :la:  But you don't know where to start or what techniques you might need to learn.  This article will give you some tips and tutorials to help you on your way.  Some links in this article do go off-site, as a warning.
Do I need a special program?
No!  Something as simple as Microsoft Paint, Paint Shop Pro or the Gimp, all of which are free, are all you need to start with pixel art.  Well, that and a mouse/touchpad (and a computer ;)).  Photoshop can be used to pixel as well, but it is costly, so unless you plan to use Photoshop for a multitude of digital media, it isn't the best investment for pixel art.
Free downloads of MS Paint and Paint Shop Pro can be found here: http://www.bunnystick.com/tdlc.html
What are some useful Pixel techniques?
When it comes to shading, both dithering and anti-aliasing (often called AA-ing) are your best

PE: Pixel Artist Interview with Cyangmou
Today I bring you an interview with a talented Pixel Artist by the name of Cyangmou.
:iconclefairykid: How did you get started in Pixel Art? Was it your first medium or did you work with something different before discovering it?
:iconcyangmou: I worked with several other mediums before, but only traditional ones, like pencil, ink and water colours. I started with pixel art because a friend made a game and it needed pixel graphics, then pixel art became a hobby and after that I started  to do visuals for games =)
:iconclefairykid: What is the thing you love the most about Pixel Art? What makes it stand out from other art mediums for you?
:iconcyangmou: Pixel art has the childhood-game-feel for me and it has the RETRO-factor. I played my first videogames on the SNES and my GBA brought me back those small but very detailed graphics with beautiful colours. The two most outstanding things of pixel graphics are form e that the graphics are us
PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: CategorizationSometimes the category system here on dA can get a little confusing.  For example; you created a piece using pixeling techniques but you intend to use it as an icon.  Where do you categorize it?  A lot of people just are not sure.  So this article should help to clear it up.
When it comes to categorization, intended use can be a huge factor.  In this case, Furcadia portraits would belong in the Icons and Handhelds gallery instead of Pixel Art or Anthro, because while it may have been created pixel by pixel and the subject is anthro, it was created for use as a portrait (often shortened to port), with specific size parameters and place of display kept in mind.  By putting them in Icons, ports are easy to find and media doesn't separate them; some ports are not done in a pixel by pixel manner but as they are similar in theme and intended use, they should be seen in the same area.  As this is not the first time this has been discussed, I feel the need to

PE: Pixel Artist Interview with Ice-Pandora
Today I bring you an interview with an isometric Pixel Artist by the name of Ice-Pandora.

:iconclefairykid: How did you get started in Pixel Art? Was it your first medium or did you work with something different before discovering it?

:iconice-pandora: I started in 2005, back then my pixel art looked a little bit different than what I'm making these days. Less cute and more non-isometric!

:iconclefairykid: What is the thing you love the most about Pixel Art? What makes it stand out from other art mediums for you?

:iconice-pandora: I love pixel art because you can create such great detailed art in a small amount of space and only by pixels.

:iconclefairykid: How long have you been working in Pixel Art? Do you feel like it's hard to learn or relatively easy to pick up or somewhere in between?

:iconice-pandora:
PE: Isometric Pixel Art FeatureI want to start out by saying that I am no expert on Isometric Pixel Art, but someone who knew far more than I did wrote the best, most comprehensive article on the subject: http://shonegold.deviantart.com/journal/Isometric-PixelArt-Simply-Defined-214155749   Even though the author no longer is active on dA, that is a great resource and I encourage its use to understand isometric pixel art =)
This article is a feature article however, so I will not be going into depth with the definition.  I started with that link to help people better understand the fine examples I am about to showcase :aww:

PE: Digital Dolls and Pixel ArtFull title: Digital Dolls and Pixel Art, Similarities and Differences.
A question I remember asking myself and have since been asked a few times is: what is the difference between a piece submitted to the customization > digital dolls > pixel art > original base* category and a piece submitted to digital art > pixel art > characters?  On the surface the answer is not much.  What it mostly comes down to is intent and process of creation.
Intent: Did the artist intend for this to be a digital doll?  Do they call it a doll?  Did they make a base first and then make the finished doll?  Did they just pixel an image but plan to make a base for public use later?  If the answer to any of these is yes, then chances are that the image belongs in the digital dolls category.  If the doll is tool shaded (use of layer effects, gradients, blur, burn, dodge, etc) or if you used someone else's base it belongs in the digital dolls category.
Process

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (also known as Moebius) was a French comics artist, working in the French tradition of bandes dessinées (bandes dessinées is derived from the original description of the comics art form as "drawn strips").

Many artists from around the world have cited Giraud as an influence on their work. Giraud was longtime friends with manga author and anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.
