F e l l a . Party by thekidKaos
Happy Birth dA! **Winner! Can you believe it's been 12 years since the launch of deviantART? That's like... a century in social media years. This will make the third year I've been privileged to be on the staff side of things for the birthday celebrations, and I couldn't be more proud. You guys really know how to throw an epic party!
If you haven't already, go forth and install this free journals skin! It's available to everyone   since as a thank you, deviantART has given premium membership access to everyone on site for today only! So, yeah, install the skin and write a journal. Spread the word and wish fella and the rest of dA a happy birthday. I bet he'd appreciate it. :B
We have a slew of events and puzzles and games planned, together with the communityrelations team you're sure to be busy all day! Please check out the Launch Article for the major details. If you're hos
My sincere thanks:star:  Happy 12th birthday, deviantART!
In two days, on August 7th, deviantART will celebrate our 12th year on the Web.  As deviantART's third employee (behind spyed and chris), I've spent over 40% of my life working for the site.
The last 12 years have oftentimes been a roller-coaster ride of the highest highs and the lowest lows, but having the opportunity to help build a site like deviantART -- that truly impacts the lives of millions of people -- while getting to work with good friends and talented peers, has been well worth any hardships.  It's been the best experience of my life.
My time at deviantART has been an incredible ride and I've learned more than I thought was possible.  From gifted co-workers to sage advisors and mentors, I'm forever grateful for every relationship and interaction, and I'd like to thank everyone who has made it possible for deviantART to get where it is today.

Happy Birthday deviantART!Holy moly, did we just go full circle into another
birthday? YOWZA! Not to mention a year of me working here! Seems like
only yesterday I was submitting this deviation, celebrating my win over
getting hired.

Then only a week later I was thrown into deviantART's 11th birthday
festivities with a team and job I was still getting to know. It was
overwhelming, exciting, and nervewracking all at the same time! I
definitely had no idea what to expect.

In hindsight, I had nothing to worry about! The team
at HQ are a great bunch and have a fabulous knack for making both
community and fellow team members feel welcome. Besides, if there's one
way to get to know new people, its definitely with a party! Well, except
for Ayame-Kenoshi She's forever alone.

This year is not with some sad goodbyes, though. We
lost LisaLotek as she flittered off to bigger and better things. We
Happy Birthday!!!Wow!  12 Years!
Happy Birthday deviantART!
I'm sure you've already read about all the fun and excitement happening today so I won't bother reiterating all of that, but I just wanted to say I hope everyone enjoys the day here on deviantART and don't forget to stop by dAmn to party with your fellow deviants and dA staff and volunteers!

Gameshow results and next event details!Birthday celebrations have been in abundance and the events hosted and challenges given have been amazing with wonderful results from you, the community. This article is a roundup of the gameshow that was held last night and a firm date for 3wyl and I to host our next event has been set!
Patience from all was greatly appreciated as it was the first time we had hosted anything with so many participants and so much to keep track of, but given the feedback I think a good time was had by everyone. In addition to myself and 3wyl working in :#communityrelations: to keep the game ticking over, we had a team of wonderful people working behind the scenes for almost 5 hours across the evening. As you may or may not know, we had "Random Acts of Kindness Day" in the photomanipulation community for dA's 12th birthday. I hinted at some prizes, and I want to let you know who the lucky winners are!
These individuals all did something awesome for the community, either by being an involved newbie, or leaving a kind and supportive comment, or featuring other deviants on this special day . . . or being awesome by being involved in the community. They all have won a one-month premium membership from Moonbeam13 and the Community Relations Team! Please join me in congratulating them.

Deviousness Award, August 2012

Deviousness Award Interview with ThiefoworldWhat is this Awesome Achievement?
The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out
on the 1st of every month to one truly outstanding deviant.
The Deviousness Award for August2012 goes to Thiefoworld.
Thank you so much to Oughter for conducting this interview!

So, Don Jon, would you like to tell the world who you are and the things you do IRL and stuff?
Hi! My name is Jonathan but everybody calls me Thiefo, yeah even IRL. I'm a Graphic Designer doing some marketing work for a living. I also do some freelance work as illustrator. I've had the opportunity to work on some independent projects, children's books, mascots and a little concept art. I

A small F.A.Q.Hello dear person who is reading this.
I guess is because lately a lot of new people is visiting me (hi guys! :D) but there are some questions I've been asked a lot lately. A LOT. And even when it doesn't bother me at all to answer these everytime, I figured out I could just make a little journal so hopefully people will look at this before asking (one can dream right? :P)
Why are you a premium member "'till hell freezes over"? How did you obtain such thing?
Staff members and volunteers get a permanent Premium Membership. I was a Community Volunteer a few years ago (a Gallery Moderator as they used to be called then). Said PM remains even when one steps down, hence why I have this status.
As a trivia fact, they're not really endless, they just last for maaany many years ;)
Who made your icon? I've seen others similar before, is there a base of some sort?

Make a Difference

Make a Difference #169Artists join deviantART to share their art and appreciate others. Due to the many artists out there, it's easy to get towed under and generally obscured from the public.
Make a Difference aims to do exactly that. This series of articles will hopefully make a difference to you as well as the artists featured weekly. Just by giving one minute of your time to write constructive comments, favourites and even watches will make a difference to these artists.

"When is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. The second best time? Today."

2014: This is the 3rd year of the project. There are many people supporting it, featuring it in their journal and offering art. BUT... There have been NO trees planted for it in the last year (I don't count mine). So, instead of talking about it, how about getting up and actually planting a tree, if you are able to? There is a lot of wonderful art waiting for you as a reward!
Trees are important, valuable and necessary to our very existence. It's not too hard to believe that, without trees we humans would not exist on this beautiful planet. Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. To grow tall the tree has become a miracle of engineering and a complex chemical factory. It is able to take water and

UPDATES CONT. - Warm Winter Project: 2012UPDATE 9 - As of Sunday, November 25, 2012, I WAS ABLE TO MEET AND PURCHASE MY DONATION GOAL OF 50 HOODIES thanks to deviantART's 30% off Black Friday sale as well as my 10% Premium Member Discount. Congratulations to us and thank you to everyone who helped out!
UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in
RESULTS: 'Warm Winter Project: 2012' ChallangeOn April 17th I started Blurple's 'Warm Winter Project: 2012' Challenge in an effort to collect points on behalf of ToxicAlice92's Warm Winter Project: 2012.
Total Collected:
2,669 x3 = 8,007
But lets round that up to a Grand Total of:
8,500 :points:
Many thanks to the very generous donors!
Additionally, three donors have been randomly selected to receive 1month Premium Memberships:
DianaGrigore JamminJo AreteEirene
If you have :points: you are willing to donate you may send them direct to ToxicAlice92. She also has a list of deviants collecting on her behalf.

100 Premium Memberships, 63,600 points!I am looking to collect 63,600 points by 25 December 2012!
I am raising 63,600 points to give 100 3-month premium memberships on Christmas Day of 2012, to give a little something back to deviants who give a lot to the community. I cannot do this alone.
How do you donate?
To donate to this cause, go to PrinceJose's page and click "Donate" on the donation pool, or go to the "Give" drop-down menu at the top-right of the page and select "Give Points." No matter which way you give, I still get them! :happybounce:
How else can you help besides donating?
To further help the cause, please favourite this news article and feature it in your next journal, poll, and send it to your friends! It will really mean a lot to the future recipients and myself. It doesn't matter how many watchers you have, but I need your help for this to be known to everyone site-wide!

I am an advanced level designer and coder of deviantART CSS skins. I am open to any kind of coding/designing of skins.
My specialization is in creating sophisticated skins both in terms of functionality and design.
Though I am open for any kind of CSS designing and coding, I am fond of designing/coding modern style skins most of the time.
My Daily Deviations
Journal Skin (Coding)
I can code your journal skin if you have got a design made by yourself or from others.
A journal skin design has to have all the necessary elements that are present in a journal skin. You need to provide me a .PSD file for coding a design with all the elements organized in layers. You need to tell me the font names that you want to use from Google fonts as well.

Origami CommissionsHello my friends!
I've been meaning to post this journal for a while but have only got to it now. Just to let you know that I am up for COMMISSIONS. Whether you would like something that you've seen in my gallery, or would like to request some exotic origami creation as a decoration/gift/way to give me grey hairs, just shoot me a note and I'll see what I can do.
To date, I have been commissioned to fold:
1) 7 miniature cranes for a to-scale dolls' house
2) A replica wedding bouquet

3) 39 golden animals for a wedding reception
4) A dinky peacock for a university friend
I only do origami commissions and accept payment through PayPal but everything else is negotiable. (Also, am willing to mail stuff to ya wherever you're at, but expect it to cost an arm and a leg if you live in Antarctica. :B)
SO HIT ME. :eager:

CSS News and Information

News August 2012General
Once more i want to thank everyone who took part in our last contest. We have been very surprised that we got so many entries and it was great to see that so many people accepted the challenge.
Of course we will host more contests every now and then. In order to be able to give away prizes we always need to help. Not sure how we should handle this, as i don't want to set up a new account for point collecting and don't want to have them all on my own account.
Anyone ideas?
Other then that there is not much i can report from the CSS front, except that you should always take a look at the latest site updates from hq as they often mention new CSS features over there.
Oh and just a random thought:
So far we haven't listed any UserStyles, but they are done via CSS only. Should we allow them to the gallery as well or not?
Wait, one last thing!
Soon dA will celebrate its 12th birthday and that means everyone(!) can use journal skins for one day. So if you don't ha

Interviews & Editorials

All Snapped Up .1 ~ popoks~ An interview of a talented artist in our General Photography Community.
bebefromtheblock, tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get into photography and why?
Well I'm Bebe,30+ , Female , I really like The Peanuts cartoon and Clint Eastwood, I like DeviantART too.
How do i get into Photography?
When I was little I remember it was always exciting to be in front of the camera as a model. Kids love that and so did I.
I got my first analog in 1989 and I took a lot of pictures of my family and nature. I got my digital camera in 2001 and I only shot portraits no still life whatsoever. In 2006, I saw a friend's DA page where he posted his tattoo art, and thought what's this? This sites so boring...I left.
But then in 2007 I checked DA again and I started to browse through it and I thought not bad, I created my account and uploaded pictures. While still wondering how do people create bokeh, or how do they create such a beautiful picture with beauti

PE Abstract and Surreal: Interview with =eintoernInterview with EintoeRn
How would you explain the concept of abstraction/surrealism to someone who has never heard of it before?
An abstract picture (maybe less so a surrealistic picture) requires the imagination, ideas and mind of those who watch it. Such it is not a one way street which transports the artist‘s vision to the watcher, but can at its best be a bidirectional process by giving the watcher the chance to be creative as well.
What inspires you to use the concept of abstraction/surrealism for your artwork?
It is commonplace knowledge that at least since the impact of the technical revolution of electronic media, a flood of pictures hits everyone of us a day by day. Many of these pictures show objects, situations, behaviors, scenes...which we all have seen ever so often with only little variations. Even with perfect tec
Get to Know Your Stockers 14: DamselStockEver wanted to know more about your favorite male stock provider?  Well then read on, because this is the bi-weekly(ish) "Get To Know Your Stockers" interview!  The questions are about stock, themselves, and a bit of silly stuff too.  Our fourteenth interview is with DamselStock.
How did you originally get into stock?
I have been a digital artist and award winning web designer for nearly 10 years and became increasingly tired of paying the inflating fees at microstock sites such as iStockphoto, so I decided I'd try using my own images in my client work. I received a lot of great feedback from clients so after a few months I became completely self reliant on my own image bank for client work. It was highly rewarding to know that a design I created relied 100% on me from coding to photography!
I had not even heard of deviantART until 5 years ago. I then signed up on an account that has since been deactivated. During my 2 years of mainta

An Absurd Interview with LaurenKitsuneWelcome to Absurd Interviews: Even better than the Spice Girls making a come back

Mmmmm! Do you smell that? It's like a sweet scent of Pina Colada in the air. What must it be? It must be our guest for today!
She's a cool girl who one day got to meet Julia Roberts... though it seems it wasn't a very pleasant experience.
Aaaanyway, since it seems I'm getting more and more lame at introductions, let's go straight to the interview, aye?
Kids! This time I bring you:
Hi Lauren! How are you today? You had your birthday recently how was it?
Hi, Thiefo! My birthday was 99% great! I have had a curse over me for 3 years to have sucky birthdays, the first of which happened in 2009, where I invited 25 people and rented out a whole wine bar...then sheepishly told the manager he might as well let other guests in after 5 people showed up.

:thumb314981612: July voting post + looking for contributorsEdit: Hi guys it seems there are problems viewing submissions in our club inbox. I just found out a handful of submissions have expired that I have not seen show up in the submissions box/log. I am terribly sorry for those who had their submissions expire and hope you will resubmit your photo('s). Even with our busy lives we have never let any submissions expire that we knew off so this is quite odd. We will keep an eye on this and should more photo's expire that we never even saw in our submissions que we will send in a bug report to DA. Again sorry and hopefully it won't happen again.
Hi everyone,
This month we're starting this journal off a little differently. We are currently looking for contributors. We just can't keep up at times due to work and school so it would be nice if we didn't really have to worry about the club at those times. The only things you will be doing is accepting pictures and inviting people so you won't have to make the journals or anything it's really quite s

*birthdays seeking volunteersHello, folks!
As a community, we seem to be having more and more notes and birthdays to cover! We're very happy about this! We love all the new members we receive! What this means, however, is we are once again looking to expand the team! The method has change slightly so be sure to read through carefully!
Things to consider before applying
How active are you on dA? Are you on the site nearly every day? We need someone that is around quite often. To begin with at least, you will only be responsible for one day of the week; however, you may be needed to cover other team members if they cannot do their day due to feeling unwell, going away, and so on.
Also, how involved are you within the dA community? We're ideally looking for someone that has a passion for the community and likes to get involved.
Personality matters. You will need to have a good attitude towards deviants you interact with. A friendly and helpful nature is a must. You also need

:happybounce: Ravenswd and I are proud to announce our 2nd annual Relativity contest!
The theme this year (overwhelmingly selected by our Watchers) is:
Your Original Character (OC) as a Hero or Villain in the Relativity Universe
Since this is a Relativity contest, simply drawing a picture of your OC as a superhero will not count.  You must incorporate something from Relativity into the piece.  Either another character from the universe or something that is a direct and obvious reference to the world.
ANY of the Relativity characters can be used.  That includes the characters in or out of costume.  Supporting characters or villains may also be used.

Thanks for the lots of response on my recent journals by the way - I received dozens of notes from people who want to run a project for example, which is awesome! What a community spirit  I'm proud of you. I've gotten back to quite some of you already - if I haven't yet, bear with me, I'll do for you what I can and remember that you're high priority for me :D There's just many and as there's often a lot to di

deviantART Seniors Projects, Spotlights, Information & dALove

dragonfly-oli RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE VOL 1Hello Everyone
Today, I begin a weekly feature "RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE VOL 1". Once a week, I will feature one artist that stands out within our deviantART Community. This deviant must be an outstanding deviant within the community, someone who cares about other deviants and the deviantART Community! This deviant can be anyone, anywhere on deviantART. I believe it is important to thank deviants for their time and dedication to our deviantART Community.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE VOL 1. Dedicated to OliviaMichalski
OliviaMichalski works weekly to showcase artists within a personal journal feature, she does this for our deviantART Community. You can find OliviaMichalski's journal features titled "Square'ish, Pure Beauty and Intimate-touching-emotive," I truly appreciate her features, dedication to excellence and the time she takes to search for sensational works of art to share with our community.
Feature: Stories with no wordsAn image is worth a thousand stories
OmeN2501, creator of the following deviation, Rain, says in the artist comments:
"Story behind it is pretty simple, they want something form her, she cannot let them have it... no matter the cost"

Who is she?
Now the viewer is left with a series of questions... Who is she? Who is pursuing her? What do they want from her? Why is this thing so important she's willing to take her own life if that means they won't have it? What would happen if they get it? And most importantly; what circumstances lead the pieces of this story up to this point?
The answers to these questions are left open to the viewer. It's up to you to decide who she is.

5 Weeks in Europe | Experience of a Lifetime!Bonjour Deviants!
Wow. What a trip. And it's still going!! Headed back tomorrow morning.
So for those of you who didn't know, I spent the last five weeks in Ireland and France first with an NYU Tisch Program and then with a friend for a week in France.
The NYU Tisch program I took in Ireland was absolutely fantastic. Not only did we complete some challenging films we also met some amazing people. The course was taught by the graduate film professor at NYU. For those of you who don't get what that means... It means this wasn't summer camp. The first day he told us:
"Sleep is for the weak... AFTER my class"
That held true with days starting at 6:30 or 7am and going until 9 or 10 at night.
It was a group of 9 students for filmmakers and 12 actresses (all girls around my age). These actresses did their own separate program and are not the actors seen in the films below. Those actors are all professionals in Ireland. Within the first week we were down to 8 filmmakers when one had to go home

Copyright Expert

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what

Please send APN DD suggestions to ^IsacGoulartDear Watchers and Friends,
Recent circumstances IRL have given me reason to step down as the APN Community Volunteer. The dA APN community deserves a more active volunteer and I have not had enough time to devote to the position. I want to thank the other CV's for their friendly help as well as Danie for being extremely understanding and accommodating. I hope to be more active in the near future when possible.
Please send your APN DD suggestions to IsacGoulart for now. He'll be watching over the gallery for the time being.

Team 3rd in the world!! OH YEAH!Sorry for the lack of update guys... things have been so busy.
I came 3rd in the world as part of the team with Wolf's Bodymagic at The World Bodypainting Festival! So yeah, I was pretty happy to say the least. I couldn't believe it when they announced it and though we'd essentially bombed...apparently not!
I've been updating my facebook and twitter more than here just because of time, so if you want to follow my ramblings you're welcome to over here:
I will be updating my DeviantArt soon, so fret not everyone who might want to see my newer work but haven't the need/want to internet stalk me. It can get pretty tiring following someone on countless websites. (Do we really *need* all of these social networking sites? How about we actually meet the people we care about in *person?!* )

Street Photography, Limits and the OlympicsSome genres of photography probably lost any high levels of veracity with the advent of Photoshop (that I sometimes use), in order to enhance the projected image, and I have nothing against, but all in favor.
But a few types of photography such as photojournalism, medical, scientific, forensic, still maintain levels of high veracity, and are regarded as being truthful renditions of the external world, as we all hope and want, and so should be Street Photography.
Keep in mind the simple definition of Street Photography: "Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings (Wikipedia)." This is minimally helpful, at best. And why? Because a big part of the confusion derives from the word "candid" itself.
Street photography, in my opinion, has a documentary style, showing the subject "as is," in the moment of capture, and his context with th
Decisive Moment vs Moment to DecideHenri Cartier-Bresson defines "The Decisive Moment" as follows:
"There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever."
However, Henri Cartier-Bresson didn't only take one single photograph when he saw a decisive moment ready to happen (David Hurn refers to this as a "pregnant moment") but rather took several images of the same scene.
That truth is reinforced by the fact that "Gare" is one of only two photographs I know of that Cartier-Bresson cropped. There was a fence off to the left, and he didn't have time to move to the right before it was time to shoot.
You can see the original, un-cropped version in his book, Henri Cartier Bresson: Scrapbook.
If you look carefully at the masters work like Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, or

Pioneers Of Street Photography - IOn August the 2nd - 2012, TheStreetFactor quietly completed one year of showcasing, fresh,

The Pioneers of Street Photography.
George Hendrik Breitner
(Sep 12, 1857 - June 5, 1923) was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
An accomplished painter, Breitner worked with a number of famous Dutch artists like,
Hendrik Mesdag, S. Mesdag-van Houten, Theophile de Bock and Vincent van Gogh - with whom
he often roamed the streets to 'look for figures and nice scenes', as Van Gogh
wrote in a letter dated, '11 July 1883' to his brother, Theo van Gogh.
Four girls, location unknown, no date
The discovery in 1996 of a large collection of photographic prints and negatives made
clear that Breitner w
Tri-X is a classic high-speed black-and-white photographic film from Kodak. It was introduced around 1940 and it was one of Kodak's first high-speed black-and-white films. Tri-X 400 is usually rated at ISO 400 when processed in standard developers, and remains among the fastest black-and-white films today.
It´s an all-purpose panchromatic film, for subjects requiring good depth of field and high shutter speeds, and for extending the flash distance range. Has fine grain, high sharpness, medium contrast, and moderate degree of enlargement.
With the advent of digital photography, Tri-X has all but fallen out of use in newspaper journalism, though it remains popular in documentary journalism, what led it to be extensively re-engineered, and in 2007 received the new designation 400TX, in place of TX or TX400, and also became finer-grained.
That's why Tri-X was one of the most popular films used by photojournalists, street photographers, and many amateurs.

Photomanipulation Community

Photomanip News and Feature 03 AugustHi everyone,
The status quo in the photomanipulation community is GO! GO! GO! We have been extremely busy with creating, supporting one another, and dreaming up contests and other fun challenges. I have been delayed in reporting our news for personal reasons, so this news article is jam-packed with goodness that you, the photomanipulation community, need to know!
Let's get started!
Calling on Community Leaders
We have a wonderful photomanipulation community here, and I'm really honored to serve you all as your Community Volunteer (CV). I have been trying to post weekly news, conduct interviews and do features, post DDs, organize Project Educate and other community challenges, host critique events, and hold contests that I hope are challenging and interesting. I absolutely love doing all of this, but I am also trying to get a Ph.D. and am going to run into trouble juggling it all in the Fall.
So, I will be asking a few of you who I know well and trust to hel
Rising Stars of Photomanipulation Vol. 03.
Names you should know: *B-r-a-c-i-a-t-a
The Rising Stars in Photomanipulation interview series focuses on upcoming rock stars from the photomanipulation community whose names you really ought to know! This week I am so excited to introduce you to someone who not only demonstrates tremendous skill in our medium, but also gives generously to the community via the creation of incredibly clean, well-composed tutorials.
I am happy for you to meet FP-Digital-Art, an Italian artist who has been with us on dA for a bit more than a year. Please enjoy the interview that he was so kind to give, and don't forget to take a moment to check out his gallery!
*B-r-a-c-i-a-t-a's Interview
So, let's start with your program of choice: Photoshop, GIMP, PSP, or other?
How did you get into photomanipulation?

Happy Birthday, dA! Photomanip/Stock Happenings!!Hello, fellow photomanipulators! And hello, dA!
Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that today (August 7th) is dA's 12th birthday! Here's what that means for you!
Stock / Photomanipulation challenges
We have a twisted fairy tale adventure for you later on today! At 9 AM PST (dA time), which is noon EDT, 5 PM GMT, and 6 PM CET, Elandria, Dan-Heffer, and I will be hosting the first part of this adventure in the :#communityrelations: chat room! Come join us for a wicked good time and a shot at winning some POINTS!
My challenge for YOU, the photomanipulation community, today!
I challenge you to take a moment to do something kind for someone today. Give a critique. Give a compliment. Have a feature in your journal. Show your support for your fellow deviants. I have some secret spies in the community, and you never know what surprises I have in store!! But don't do it for the prizes. Be kind. It makes dA a better
DD Myths? Let's hear 'em!Hi all,
Just a really quick journal to let you know that, next week over in Project Educate, Astralseed is hosting Daily Deviation week! This will be an opportunity to learn more about what DDs are and what they are NOT. If you are not watching projecteducate, make sure you have an eye on it starting Monday! :D
Now, I need your help!
I have an article I'm writing for DD Week, and I'm focusing on DD Myths and Legends. Do you have any unanswered questions or stories or feelings about DD? What do you believe to be true about them? For example, do you think being friends with a CV helps you get a DD? Don't be shy. I want to address the myths you can think of and provide some real answers.
I'd love to hear your thoughts, but please be quick, as I'm wrapping this article up in the next 24 hours or so. :XD:

As we traverse the final phases of maximum raw information accumulation, potentially equipping us for jacking in to the promise of the Singularity, the contents of many lifetimes’ worth of knowledge, art, education, and history are now at our fingertips. More and more Universities, libraries and arts institutions have swung open their digital doors and granted access to their lectures, courses and curricula free of charge to anyone in the world with a connection to the web. Access to education is fundamentally shifting our society towards an unmappable

Charity: Water Starts the Process for the Well!I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in the charity: water project I wrote about in February of this year. Whether you were able to actively donate to, read up on, or help spread the word about this honorable cause, I genuinely felt touched by the actions of every person who took the time to participate.
I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. In a world where a lot of the news headlines are depressing and bleak, my faith in the power of good and caring was restored by the deviantART community.
Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this.

FAQ Revamp PT3Another busy week for the FAQ Revamp. Some new FAQs have been added and we removed quite a large number of FAQs, but have no fear the majority of the information removed was actually merged to create more beneficial FAQs or it was completely obsolete. Since the beginning of our project we have removed a total of 42 FAQs and added in 15.
The following are some of the things we have worked on this week.
Under My Account the section "My Earnings" has been added and three brand new FAQs have been created. FAQ 123 has been relocated here.
The deviantART>News section has been completely removed as none of them were relevant anymore
deviantFilm section was reviewed
Merged FAQ 671, 760, 761, 858, 863, 868, 869, 865 into a single FAQ to match up with the Collection Folders equivalent

We're looking for game players to come and join in our deviantART Birthday Event! In just a short while  3wyl and myself are hosting an interpretation of a British game show called Pointless. The idea of the game is that you  have to guess the least popular answer to a multiple answers question.  We'll have pre-judged the least popular and most popular answers by asking a panel of CVs beforehand for their responses. Want an example?

Okay so Mission Impossible is a really high answer and if you said that one, you'd get lots of points. Which isn't good! If you said Rain Man - you'd possibly be getting less points. But if you said something like Endless Love or Taps, then you'd be hitting on an answer tha

Twitter TipsHi printscommunity!,
In our last poll we asked about your use of Twitter in promoting your Prints. Well, the community has spoken and a number of you have asked for some tips on how to better use Twitter to promote your work. So, we've put together some tips for you on how to leverage the Twitter platform in marketing yourself.
Twitter is different from dA, facebook, and tumblr in a number of ways. Perhaps the most important is brevity. Most tweets live and die in a matter of minutes. The vast majority of tweets die in the first hour. Also, you only have 140 characters to say what you want. So how the heck are you gonna use this thing to market your prints?
Here is a list of things that we've found to be massively helpful.

PE Stereoscopy: How to take a Stereo PhotoHow to take a Stereoscopic Photo
It's a common misconception that you need special equipment to take a 3D photo. You don't :) All you need is a bit of knowledge and any old camera (even the one on your phone is OK!).
The easiest way to take a stereo photo is the cha-cha method (that's right, we'll do a bit of dancing!). Basically, you take a photo, take a step to the side, and take another photo:
Camera stock by muratyil
Just make sure you don't move too far (whoa there Fella!), because the distance between the two photos should be about the distance between your eyes (in fancy stereo speak we call this the "interocular". You can make this distance a bit bigger for objects that are really far away, (like landscapes and scenery), and a bit smaller for things which are close up.
Be careful not to make the difference between your images too big, or you end up with a stereo pair that doesn't sit on top of each other properly. When this happens, you can see transparent
PE Stereoscopy: How do I make a stereogram? How do I make a stereogram?
Have you checked out our tutorial for taking your own stereo photo?
Think carefully about the type of stereogram you want to make, and follow the instructions below:
Anaglyph is the method of viewing stereoscopic images using those funny colored glasses. The reason it's still quite popular is because you don't need a special monitor or TV to view it, the glasses are quite cheap, and most people have access to a pair somewhere.
Anaglyph glasses come with lenses in a wide variety of colors. Most people associate anaglyph with Red/Cyan glasses which have a red lens covering the left eye, and a cyan (a kind of bright bluey-green) lens covering the right eye.
In actual fact, many color combinations will work, it's just most people won't have glasses that can see them. You can check out other c

PE Stereoscopy: The Stereo GlossaryThe Stereoscopy Glossary
Stereoscopy is a very technical art form. While there are lots of opportunities to be creative, there's also a lot of lingo and technical terms floating around.
Here's a handy dandy glossary of some common ones, with some links to help you along :)
Accidental stereo effects
This is a strange effect that you notice when you create a stereographic photo which has repeating pattens in it. It happens because the pattern isn't 100% perfectly identical all the way along, and the slight differences in shape cause it to appear as if it's in a different place from the parts of the image around it. Postage stamps, wallpaper and other things with patterns tend to cause this effect.
Accommodation is when the eye refocuses from one object to another when your vision shifts (like looking through a window on a rainy day, you can focus on the raindrops clinging to the glass, or on the landscape outside).

PE Stereoscopy: Interview with Christoph BungertInterview with Christoph Bungert, Founder of
Today we have a very special treat, Christoph Bungert has kindly agreed to answer some questions about the global Stereoscopy community for us and his experiences!
Christoph was born in 1967 and lives in Germany. He started the "Stereoscopic 3D Homepage" in 1995, and the domain followed soon after. Cristoph is interested in everything to do with stereoscopy, but has a special obsession for hardware and stereoscopic 3D playback.
How did you get into stereoscopy?
In the early 90’s I got interested in virtual reality and dreamt of a VR-headset with head tracking. I realised these were expensive, uncomfortable and delivered bad image quality. 3D-glasses were the superior and affordable alternative.
Why did you decide to create a stereoscopy website?
In 1995 I bought my first 3D-LC-shutterglasses and
PE Stereoscopy: Depth Scores and Making Good SteDepth Scores & Making Good Stereo
Because anaglyph is the best way to really be able to examine a stereo image (on a normal screen) without getting sore eyes, in this guide, we'll be using it to discuss various stereoscopy optimisation principles. I apologise in advance to anyone who doesn't have red/cyan glasses!
Depth Scoring for Film and Animation
To be able to effectively use stereo in your films or animations, aside from the equipment and techniques you'll be using to do it, you will also need to familiarise yourselves with some basic concepts and principles of what you should and shouldn't do.
In film or animation, story is king. This is the most important thing to understand. Nothing should be more important, not the medium you use, not the style or the art, and definitely not the stereo. It's important to think about what the story needs and adapt everything else to it.
Back in 2009, Creative Cow published a

PE Stereoscopy: Open Discussion and Q and AOpen Discussion and Q&A
It's been a pretty full-on week of Stereoscopy articles and events. By now hopefully some people who knew nothing about stereo before now have an idea of what it is and how to make it, and maybe some who were already doing it have learned something too!
For now I'd like to open this journal to an open discussion. Stereoscopy is a hard topic and it's still not an exact science. There are a lot of opinions on what's good and bad/right and wrong, and right now there's not always a correct answer. Absolutely no question or comment anyone posts here is stupid or obvious. Anything that can be done to clarify is a good thing!
Please post the following in the comments section:

Without further delays, here are some of our winners from this week!

PE Abstract and Surreal: IntroductionIntroduction: Defining abstract and surreal
The term abstract comes from the Latin word abstrahere (to draw away) and refers to the concept of abstraction. In abstract art it means that the artists uses a visual language of form, color and line to create an image which is almost free from any references in the visual world. Related terms are nonfigurative art, nonobjective art and nonrepresentational art.

In abstract photography the actual subject doesn’t matter much – it’s not important what you see but how you see and feel a picture. This is why abstract artists often refuse to reveal the subject of their photographs or even the used technique. They prefer not to distract the viewer from the deeper concept of their artwork. However, a lot of abstract photographers c

Gameshow results and next event details!Birthday celebrations have been in abundance and the events hosted and challenges given have been amazing with wonderful results from you, the community. This article is a roundup of the gameshow that was held last night and a firm date for 3wyl and I to host our next event has been set!
Patience from all was greatly appreciated as it was the first time we had hosted anything with so many participants and so much to keep track of, but given the feedback I think a good time was had by everyone. is right around the corner. We'll be kicking off September 24th and we need you on board!
What is Community Week?
The majority of Project Educate is run by the CVs. But there's only a few of them and a lot of us—which is why we're asking you, now, to contribute. Know about a specialized art form or technique? Got some advice on becoming well-known for positivity? Want to share your sweet critique skills? We want it all, and we want it now.

In the past, people have contributed in all kinds of ways. The following are just some suggestions to get your thoughts going!

Art History - Interview with deshrubber:iconarthistoryproject: :iconcommunityrelations:
As part of Traditional Art History Month I will be interviewing some of  the Traditional Art Community, including your lovely TradART Community  Volunteers :aww:
Today it's the talented deshrubber, your Community Volunteer for Traditional Art

Hi deshrubber, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
Hi, I'm Tim! I've been drawing for most of my life and took up painting around the age eighteen. Abstract is the general style most of my works fit into, mainly because I like to watch people try to figure out what they mean.
What is it that attracts you to Traditional Art?
I love the smell and feel of the paint. The way bristles of a paint brush move under different pressures, tablet pens don't have that feeling. I like the way textures are real and cast shadows(if heavily textured) , which you don't get with di

The Beginning of MangaNarrative in art has been seen for centuries in a wide range of different forms. Now I should start off by saying the 'true origins' of manga is disputed. World War II accelerated the world of comics and manga. However we'll take a look at what has been going on before global conflict changed everything. We'll start with the actual name itself, manga, meaning 'whimsical pictures'. So this is the nature of it, satire, doodles, sketches, exaggeration and humour. The first time this term was used to describe a piece of artwork in Japan was given to Hokusai Manga (first published in 1814). So there is the term itself, but going a bit further back is where it's real history becomes debatable.
Theory 1
Manga started around 12-13th century, the Japanese Fujiwara Period. Animal caricatures known seen on picture scrolls are an early form of narrative. They show mischief and fun doodles, and they are actually an early example of Japanese art that is breaking away from their Chinese
The Beginning of American ComicsI am sure this is a topic a lot of you would be interested in! As with my article on the Beginning of Manga. I'm only going to touch on the root of it for now as I have other articles planned to tie them together! The American comic book, is really quite new in comparison with past narrative art forms. In fact we haven't had a century yet of the modern American comic as we know it.
Let us begin by looking at The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck by Swiss artist Rudolphe Töpffer. It is considered to be the oldest known comic book and started in Europe and was printed in several languages all the way back in 1837, but it was reprinted in 1842 in New York, the first printed comic book in America. There were no word balloons as you would imagine comics today, however there was text in the book to describe what was going on. This was produced in a period of comic book histor

American Comics, Manga...AND WAR!This is a major turning point in the history of comics, World War II. This period of time not only changed comics as we knew them, but also other areas in graphics such as propaganda posters. Now mid to late 1930's we've seen the birth of the modern comic book. Due to the war as well we're also now seeing the birth of war comics. An obvious example of this as I'm sure many of you have already guessed is Captain America Comics in 1941 (before American involvement in the war).  Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby who worked for Timely Comics, which of course has now become Marvel Comics. He gained amazing popularity and is often fighting the Axis powers in World War II.
Around this time in Japan has been rebuilding itself, its political  and economic infrastructure was changing. Whilst American occupation disallowed art or published material that glorified war or the Japanese military. This policy though didn't block th
Art History Project- September is Literature!:new: 30/08/12: Almost ready to launch! Alongside this month, inknalcohol is conducting a series of cheeky lit interviews for Art History, so keep an eye out for what he uncovers!
There are still lots of slots for people to submit articles too! Don't forget, we can have more than one article on the same day! Please get those proposals in! Who is your favourite author? What Book/Poem has had the most influence on you? Bring it on!
24/08/12: Hey guys, we're still looking to fill this up nice and meaty! Don't forget, the articles don't have to be as in depth as some of you are thinking and can be about specific authors, styles or even something different such as interviews or chat event (get your lit group involved!).
If you're not sure about your idea, please still send it in, we have a wonderful crack commando unit who are helping for crimes they didn't commit in the backroom. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, you can use this team! :D

Art History: History of Comic-con InternationalThe San Diego Comic-Con International (commonly known as just Comic-Con) is almost a household name these days. But how did it originate? Some of you would be surprised to know that the first Comic-Con was held way back in 1970 where approximately 145 people attended. That really expresses how large it has grown since then - the attendance rate being more than 130,000 this year.

In 1970, Comic-Con was founded by Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry. The first convention was a one-day event, not known as Comic-con - but Golden State Comic Con. A few years later in 1973, the convention was renamed and officially known as San Diego Comic-Con. In this same year, it held it's first celebrity brunch and was the first Comic-Con with a duration of five days.

Over the years, the attendance of Comic-con has increased significantly - now being one of the largest conventions in the world. With the att
Art History: Takeshi ObataTakeshi Obata is an award-winning Japanese manga artist well-known for his contributions towards series such as Hikaru no Go, Bakuman,  and more. His projects are often in collaboration with writers.
His style is unique among shonen artists, many don't explore fashion when it comes to manga - but his character designs often include fashionable clothing and trendy items. He's known for the extreme detail in his artwork.
One of his most popular works is Death Note, which is well-known globally. Death Note is one of two series where he worked with writer, Tsugumi Ohba; they recently collaborated again for Bakuman. At the time of publishing, Death Note was nothing anyone else had seen before in manga, and received positive views by critics.
In addition to his manga work, he's worked in the video game industry - doing character designs for Castlevania Judgment.

July 2012 Vector DDs...sorry so late!Apologies!!  I'm so sorry this is so late coming out! I haven't had a very good connection at home this past darling hubby went over our download limit and our speed was slowed to dial-up speed....eep! I couldn't get ANYthing to I couldn't do anything here :(  Everything's back to normal now (whatever 'normal' is), so without further are July's Vector DDs! :D
What is Vector Art?
In digital art there are two layer formats: raster and vector. Raster formats are based in pixels and vector is based in paths and points.
When you resize a raster image, you are expanding the pixels. Your program has to try to estimate what the colours would be for the additional pixels created. Due to this, the image loses it's clarity and creates a pixel effect.
When you resize a vector image, you are increasing the distance between the points. Due to this, the image doesn't lose it's clarity and doesn't pixellate.

 thankfully the issues are now weekly. This exhibits a huge amount, as well as a variety of articles that are current and relevant. Having the issues weekly make them like a weekly magazine :reading:

 so very true

I think there were more articles for last week due to deviantART's Birthday Celebration. However, I could be wrong too, we will know for sure over the next few weeks.

I am sure there will be plenty of articles in the weeks to come. I just get worn out adding articles or would probably add more. Since I mostly use my iPad these days I have to save the thumb each time since pages opened in another tab can reset after changing tabs. So, it takes me a bit longer to add the thumbs; however, it also means I can sit in my LazyBoy and add articles while watching TV!

I'm sure there will be

I like the using the iPad for reading, games and some browsing, I get to flustered trying to use it for any type of work.

Thankfully I have a stylus or it would be much harder to work on dA! I have had to figure out the tricks to copying and pasting!

So I just edited #Unframed-Nature's news section to include this article, since it just went up not long before this one did!
We were crossing paths.

I don't like the new thing where you highlight it and it says "read this news". It's better if it just sticks to showing the preview, imo.
JamminJo Featured By Owner Aug 10, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
I understand what you mean about the "read this news". However, it's not an option to change how the thumbs present themselves  it's coded by deviantART.
