Joining dAWishingWell
ONLY MEMBERS can have their wishes listed. Please read this blog to learn how to join!
Why would I be declined from joining?
We decline deviants for various reasons. As a group geared towards creating a positive atmosphere on deviantART, we try really hard to not decline anyone. We do decline anyone in clear violation of deviantART policy and those individuals who harass the admins of this group. As of 8/25/2013, accounts under 1 month of age are not permitted to join due to difficulties that have experienced with these members regarding moved accounts among other factors (although once a new account that wasn't from a moved deviant has turned 1 month old, they may attempt to join). Accounts that are under 1 month from a moved member will be required to mention the name of their previous account during review.

Acts of Random Kindness!Hello fellow positivity promoters!
The time has come to announce our plans for ARKs. Acts of Random Kindness are those little things you do for others that make them and you feel great! You might leave a nice comment for a new deviant welcoming them to dA, leave a helpful critique for a struggling artist, grant a wish at dAWishingWell, answer a burning question to help a deviant out, donate to a donation pool, give a premium sub to another member, and more! If it is kind, promoting positivity and makes people smile, it is probably an ARK!
This is a great project created by jadecillustrations and expanded by Hardrockangel!"...each month you commit yourself to doing at least one or two (or more) random acts of kindness to spread positivity throughout the community. Special Project UpdateWe have been promoting ToxicAlice92's Warm Winter Project through our members, donating 20 points on the behalf of every member that leaves a comment or journal behind telling other deviants about this great project! I know we can reach a goal of 2000 points in July! Spread the word about this great project! Ashley is over halfway to her goal. Don't stop now! Let's see her finish her goal!

Personally, when I think of "quality" the word alone (to me) is meaningless. However, when I think of the quality of our Daily Deviations........ I can have a positively detailed conversation with any deviant within our community. I hope you are feeling the same way  recently a journal was posted to encourage feedback to our Community Voluntee

2014: This is the 3rd year of the project. There are many people supporting it, featuring it in their journal and offering art. BUT... There have been NO trees planted for it in the last year (I don't count mine). So, instead of talking about it, how about getting up and actually planting a tree, if you are able to? There is a lot of wonderful art waiting for you as a reward!

Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. To grow tall the tree has become a miracle of engineering and a complex chemical factory. It is able to take water and

I am an advanced level designer and coder of deviantART CSS skins. I am open to any kind of coding/designing of skins.
My specialization is in creating sophisticated skins both in terms of functionality and design.
Though I am open for any kind of CSS designing and coding, I am fond of designing/coding modern style skins most of the time.

My Daily Deviations
Journal Skin (Coding)
I can code your journal skin if you have got a design made by yourself or from others.
A journal skin design has to have all the necessary elements that are present in a journal skin. You need to provide me a .PSD file for coding a design with all the elements organized in layers. You need to tell me the font names that you want to use from Google fonts as well.

Origami CommissionsHello my friends!
I've been meaning to post this journal for a while but have only got to it now. Just to let you know that I am up for COMMISSIONS. Whether you would like something that you've seen in my gallery, or would like to request some exotic origami creation as a decoration/gift/way to give me grey hairs, just shoot me a note and I'll see what I can do.

Hi deshrubber, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
Hi, I'm Tim! I've been drawing for most of my life and took up painting around the age eighteen. Abstract is the general style most of my works fit into, mainly because I like to watch people try to figure out what they mean.
What is it that attracts you to Traditional Art?
I love the smell and feel of the paint. The way bristles of a paint brush move under different pressures, tablet pens don't have that feeling. I like the way textures are real and cast shadows(if heavily textured) , which you don't get with di

Hi pica-ae, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
- Hi! I am a web designer form Hamburg, Germany. In my spare time I have always enjoyed doing any kind of art. When I was smaller I started with Watercolors and moved on to Oil, before I went to design school and focused mostly on digital art.
My style… I am not sure I found it yet. Well, I am always looking for it, tho! I see finding one's style as a constant struggle. In my works you can find lots of bright colors, very often things are kept simple, minimal maybe in content or simple in composition. Mostly I try to keep away from

Another dAmn Interview! - LawraRandalaAnother dAmn Interview! is an interview series I've started up where I interview a deviant who is a regular in the dAmn/Chatroom area of deviantART, and ask them to share their initial and current opinons on that area of the site. I'd love some suggestions on how it can be improved if you have any, as well as any other questions you think should be asked. Thank you!
1. When did you start using dAmn compared to how long you've been on dA?
- I created my first account on December 2005, and around January 2006 I found the chatrooms... so pretty quick, I'd say. =P
2. Did you find yourself drawn to any chatrooms in particular when you first started using them?
- For years, I went to #devart only. I found a lot of people there that I felt connected with, and it didn't even occur to me to go anywhere else. But things have changed in there, and I've started 'wandering' around, so to say. :giggle:
3. Have you made any

Hi Astralseed, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
Hi I'm Katy and I am not very good at talking about myself :B.  As far as my art style goes, I don't really feel that I have a particular style so to speak.  I like to dabble in any and all areas of art which I possibly can and just absorb it all like a sponge.  I think the style will follow eventually when I am more comfortable with the basics.
What is it that attracts you to Traditional Art?
Traditional art offers a lot of variety and options.

Things were pretty rough for ol' Boxy and I for awhile. He used to be sat on, shoved around, and mistaken for trash. I'm happy to say that he is finally being recognized as an important part of the deviantART

I'm a creation addict... and my name is Sylwia (: My personality and interests are clearly visible in what and how I do; a bit twisted, with a creepy shell, sometimes rigid, but I tend to hide a smile in details that require your search.
I'm crazy about trying new things and techniques and what you can see in my dA gallery is just a tip of an iceberg.

bebefromtheblock, tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get into photography and why?

How do i get into Photography?
When I was little I remember it was always exciting to be in front of the camera as a model. Kids love that and so did I.
I got my first analog in 1989 and I took a lot of pictures of my family and nature. I got my digital camera in 2001 and I only shot portraits no still life whatsoever. In 2006, I saw a friend's DA page where he posted his tattoo art, and thought what's this? This sites so boring...I left.
But then in 2007 I checked DA again and I started to browse through it and I thought not bad, I created my account and uploaded pictures. While still wondering how do people create bokeh, or how do they create such a beautiful picture with beauti

Even with our busy lives we have never let any submissions expire that we knew off so this is quite odd. We will keep an eye on this and should more photo's expire that we never even saw in our submissions que we will send in a bug report to DA. Again sorry and hopefully it won't happen again.

We just can't keep up at times due to work and school so it would be nice if we didn't really have to worry about the club at those times. The only things you will be doing is accepting pictures and inviting people so you won't have to make the journals or anything it's really quite s

Bring Your Type to Life - A Typography ContestIt is time for another Typography contest! The theme of this contest will be…
Bring your Type to Life
This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.
Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!
What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. This contest has a more visual approach, so you will not be judged on the creativity of the meaning you choose to give to the letters. However, don't rush it! Even one letter can appear completely different than another. Be wise with the letters, word

Creativity is Cool Contest--less than one week!!!The Contest is over!!!!   Now the judging shall begin!!!!!  :la:
THE THEME
We have decided our theme will be Creativity is Cool
This contest is somewhat different: We will provide you with different stock images: Four of people, four of interior shots, four of outdoor/landscape images and four 'unusual or 'difficult' images. Now your mission is to choose one (or more) of those and get as creative with it as possible!  You can use any part of the stock images in any way you like--so long as it's recognizable as having come from the image.  Imagine all the different possibles!
Here pure skill is not as important- A perfect portrait might get not as much recognition as a really creative piece with the same stock base.

Colors Poetry ContestColors Poetry Contest!!
When I started the Wordsmiths group here at DA, I had three goals - produce a new sitehttp://word-smyths.com/   , an ezine  http://artsmyths.wordpress.com/   and a paid poetry contest. I have accomplished the first two. I am pleased to be able to say that our wordpress site is receiving daily submissions from authors outside of DA, as that gives all of you featured there more exposure.

I am pleased to announce my third project - a poetry contest with a cash prize awarded to the first three place winners.
The contest will be poetry only and will run from August 1 - October 31, 2012. The theme is "Color". You can choose to write about one color, or many. You can describe a situation, person, object, scene - anything, but describe it in color(s). How it looks...makes you feel.
The prizes will be as listed below: (It would be helpful to have a Paypal account in order to be paid.)

Photographer of the week: WoW-Sky

WoW-Sky has been here for three years and has a vastly varied gallery! However the still life works and the effort and time that has gone into creating each and every deviation really caught my eye. That's why WoW-Sky has been chosen as this weeks spotlit photographer!

" What's the most obscure subject you have been asked to photograph?"
If there is one vital thing that I have learned in my years as an amateur photographer - it's that to diversify and spread yourself amongst as many outlets, ideas and topics as possible is the best way to move forward and become successful. Photography doesn't begin or end with a Wedding. Nor does it start with a fashion shoot that pays you hundreds of pounds. There are so many niches and gaps in between that people overlook as lesser known and inadequate - but that can be one of the strongest rungs on the ladder to success. (See what I did there?) It's coming to the end of a week where I've stretched myself
photographically, more so than usual, and I'm more than happy to share what I have learned in order to help out those who want to step up with their work. Last week I was recruited by an image company as a

People and Portraits Exposed #4 When to use the Miscellaneous People & Portraits Gallery
This week we've put together an article that explores when to use the miscellaneous category within the People & Portraits Gallery . It's a tricky topic, but one that can quite easily be defined in many ways. Here we've got some examples that will hopefully help you understand what does fit in the miscellaneous portraiture gallery.

This piece by IsacGoulart is a classic example of when it might be correct to use the miscellaneous category. This work could quite easily fit into a sky scape gallery or indeed water scapes within Animals, Plants and Nature. However in this case, the person in the shot is important and it's what makes this portraiture as well as anything else. But when looking at the sub-categories within the People & Portraits Gallery, there isn't really anything that it completely fits with.

"Why are YOU reading this?"
-This- little bit of space right up here at the top of the weekly Photography Article is usually filled with a newsworthy topic, or a question. And it nearly always gets ignored!! So many of you look at this article, favourite it and comment on it - but what are you looking at it for? Are you gazing at the images? The news? The links? You're certainly not looking at the paragraph right up here that can sometimes be the juiciest bit of the whole article!! As a reader, you're important. Without your input and without positive stats, this article would dwindle - so it's here for you. Tell me what you want to see...

People and Portraits Exposed #4 People, Portraits & The Olympics
The Olympics 2012 officially opens today in London and with it the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of moments are going to be captured across the next two weeks. Sports Photography can belong in several categories across deviantART and it's often difficult to know precisely which one. And guess what - I've got no real answers for you! My only tip is that you need to keep in mind that sports documentation is more likely to be Photo-Journalism than anything else. Unless your sports shots are posed to be creative, emotive and so on - they don't technically belong in the people and portraits galleries. Utilize Photo-journalism as much as you can over the coming weeks, whether you're at the Olympics or you're shooting some summer sports!

Photomanipulation Community

Photomanip News and Feature 03 AugustHi everyone,
The status quo in the photomanipulation community is GO! GO! GO! We have been extremely busy with creating, supporting one another, and dreaming up contests and other fun challenges. I have been delayed in reporting our news for personal reasons, so this news article is jam-packed with goodness that you, the photomanipulation community, need to know!
Let's get started!
Calling on Community Leaders
We have a wonderful photomanipulation community here, and I'm really honored to serve you all as your Community Volunteer (CV). I have been trying to post weekly news, conduct interviews and do features, post DDs, organize Project Educate and other community challenges, host critique events, and hold contests that I hope are challenging and interesting. I absolutely love doing all of this, but I am also trying to get a Ph.D. and am going to run into trouble juggling it all in the Fall.
So, I will be asking a few of you who I know well and trust to hel
Go read this now.CLICK: Stock and Resources Policy Clarification
It affects you, too, as photomanipulators.
Work that is made with illegitimate stock can be moved/removed.
This includes premade backgrounds that are not made with legitimate sources!
(For example, people who take stock from stock sites like sxc.hu and redistribute it as premade backgrounds are going against dA policy, and YOU could have your images moved or removed if you use those premades. Be careful with premades and make sure you know where the person providing the premade got the stock for it.)
We'll talk about it.
....more soon.

deviantART Community Volunteers Projects, Spotlights, Information & dALove

If you care about ART...Hey all! I'd like to adress something very important for everyone who cares about art and the internet. A lot of help is needed. Please read this and help if you can; it won't take long but it can make a big difference. I'll soon explain what you can do, first I'll explain why your help is needed.
What's the issue?
The .art top level domain will soon be made available. A corporation will be assigned to manage it. That means that, besides .com, .org, .nl, .tv etc. people will also be able to make websites as www.websitename.art. This would mean a great opportunity for artists and art supporters alike to create art portfolios, websites that help artists in some way, etc.
This can bring great improvements to the art world, if managed well.
That is where the potential trouble starts :( About a dozen companies have applied to manage .art. However, most of them are large companies hoping to make big profit. Most of these companies have nothing to do with
UE Updates August 2012General Update
Things have been mostly calm and smooth.  I believe the biggest problem we have had over the past month is an influx in submissions of normal equines.  This is where I stress that our group is a fantasy equine based group and we do not allow such submissions.  Please keep that in mind when submitting to us as we'd prefer it if we wouldn't have to decline so many submissions over something as simple as members submitting content that doesn't belong in the group.  If anyone has any questions or needs clarification on what we will or wont accept, you are always welcome to ask via note or comment to our group and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

DD Suggestion Guidelines [PixelArt]Hello everyone c: I've been hearing that people want to know more about what individual CVs look for when they select DDs, aside from the usual 6 months in between DDs type stuff. I think it would be great to discuss some of the things I look for, because I keep getting great suggestions but they don't quite fit the kinds of things I'm looking for, so to help us all out here is what I consider when looking at a piece.
Please keep in mind that these are "personal" opinions and do not reflect the opinions or guidelines of other dA staff or CVs. Most of these are not "absolute" things that a piece must or must not have, it's more an insight into what I think about each piece when deciding.
1. I don't always decide on the spot.
Sometimes it might be weeks or even months before I look back over something and decide I want to feature it for certain. This is partly the reason why I personally don't notify people of whether I will feature their suggestion or not. I also like it to be a
Updated DD Guidelines...Sort ofEdit: Added in a bit on miscats.
I had rather in depth DD guidelines posted for when I looked after Pixel Art and Digital Dolls, and after reading some comments on this journal DDs: Behind the Magic, I decided I should probably post more in depth guidelines for Fan Art, since there appears to be a lot of call for detail.
Admittedly, I am still trying to find my stride with Fan Art.  Pixel Art and Digital Dolls are a bit more technique based galleries (by which I mean there were certain technical aspects, hard-fast rules (hand-laid pixels and no computer generated effects for pixel art and a hard pixel outline for digital dolls, as examples) that had to be present to qualify art for the category) than Fan Art is.  And there are a wider array of styles present within Fan Art, some of which I am not very familiar with.  So it's a bit more trial and erro

Updated DD Suggestion GuidelinesWhat with all the buzz about concerning CV's updating their guidelines, and a bunch of other informative journals concerning them, I realized...I've never really gone over my personal preference for daily deviation suggestions, nor have I really outlined my guidelines. I guess now is as good a time as any, right?
For the most part, it's really easy to suggest to me, I like to think. I try to respond to most notes that I receive, and when I don't I encourage you to resend, though spamming me doesn't get anybody anywhere! I recently deleted over 1000 notes, and I'm already back up to 600+. I love that you have an avid suggestion career, folks, but there will always be a delay with that many! <3
Suggesting a Daily Deviation to pullingcandy!
:bulletblack: Daily deviation suggestions to me must be from the Photography > Cosplay and in some cases the Artisan Crafts > Cosplay & Role Playing catagories.
I also accept suggestions from the Photography > Horror & M
dArama: Let's get solution-focusedHello, lovelies!
For months now, there have been whispers of dissatisfaction and discomfort concerning our photomanipulation community. For some of you, it no longer seems like a home. For others, it is becoming ransacked with things that did not belong, like pornography, inflations, decapitations, and celebrity images. With the addition of copyright violations off-site, those whispers have become screams of discontent about dA in general.
I hear you, and as a liaison between dA staff and the community, I am doing my best to ensure your voices are heard.
But, what are YOU doing about it?
YOU are empowered to do a lot, too. For every complaint, for every disgruntled member of our community, there is a solution. And that solution does NOT have to involve leaving dA.
Let's talk about some of those solutions.
Tired of not having a DD?
Suggest your own work. If it is not accepted, ask for a critique and work to learn from it. Even if you do not agree with it, there is surely somet

#SixWordStories: Monthly ShowcaseA type of Flash Fiction, six word stories are (very) short stories with an exact word count: six words. SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. Though these stories are so brief in length, they can be as profound, if not more, than the prose and poetry you see and read every day, partly because six word stories can tell us so much and yet contain so little.
In our feature articles, we will be showcasing six word stories submitted to Freestyle folder.

Forum Features: Hot!Once again, the CV team is here featuring the works of dA's beloved forumers! :la:
Once per month we'll select one active user in the forums and we'll feature his or her gallery. This is someone we believe represents the forums well with both good forum-abilities and art.
As we're kind (and awesome), we also decided to give an opportunity to everybody to get featured! Every month, we'll create a thread in the Deviation Thumbshare Forum with a different theme. This thread will be made into a sticky for easy access. All you have to do is post thumbs from your gallery matching the theme and, at the end of the month, we'll select our favorite thumbs from that thread and feature them in the next news article :)
The best thing is that the only requirement is that you're an active member of the forums!

The air buzzes with positivity, inspiration, and camaraderie, but in the back of your mind, you know it may be another year before you see some of these friends, old and new. Sure, we always have the Internet, but there's something special about meeting in real life that can’t compare to flipping through a portfolio of sketches, laughing out loud with your peers, and supporting artists’ hard work right then and there.
There was rarely a moment when one of our seven kiosks wasn’t occupied by an artist. Young or old, newbie or professional, digital or traditional, the chance to sit down and create art was difficult to pass up with inspiration coming from every direction.

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be another “ism” on the art world horizon, what with the growing accessibility of all

or even existence of any current art “movement” … comes “suggestivism,” the “ism” best summing up what art is in our lives today, defined

Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.

Stock Providers! We have been listening!Your concerns about the state of our gallery...
Are the things that concern us all, I hope with the updates and clarifications to our FAQ specific to stock and resources, plus an official reminder of the stock and resources policies here --->

Will help to refute the rumours going around that staff and volunteers don't care about the "non-stock" being posted in our gallery.
I am here to tell you with absolute certainty that we DO care A LOT!!!!! Getting things like this into action to start resolving some of the far reaching issues we face as an integral part of the wider DA community takes time, but still doesn't mean your concerns are being ignored.
We will be working very VERY VERY hard to make a significant impact on the huge amount of "celeb stock" and "renders" (that aren't actually renders  ) and all the other "stuff" thats being submitted to stock and resources.
Its not going to get better over night.
FAQ Revamp UnderwayHey deviants!!
The Help Desk team myself ewm, Ikue, and MidnightExigent have been super busy making sure that all of your General Inquiries and Bug Reports get handled as soon as possible. Our current initial response time is no more than 48 hours this week! We are super pleased to announce that we’ve been doing a lot more than handling tickets lately. We are doing some serious business FAQ Revamping to make sure all FAQs are completely up to date and easy to understand. We are also merging similar FAQs to reduce redundancy to keep the overall FAQ amounts low to ensure it’s easier to find the information you are looking for.
We started the FAQ Revamp last week and we’ve already covered a little over 100 FAQs!! The following FAQ sections are ones we have already tackled or are currently in the process of tackling.

Another update from the Help Desk Team about the FAQ Revamp :D We started with a total of 302 FAQs not including Retail and Copyright & Etiquette related FAQs. So far in the past 2 weeks we have reviewed 218 and have 84 left to review. It may seem like only a small bit left to go but we still have a lot more planned.
The following sections are ones we have reviewed this week completely/partially:

Charity: Water Starts the Process for the Well!I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in the charity: water project I wrote about in February of this year. Whether you were able to actively donate to, read up on, or help spread the word about this honorable cause, I genuinely felt touched by the actions of every person who took the time to participate.
I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. In a world where a lot of the news headlines are depressing and bleak, my faith in the power of good and caring was restored by the deviantART community.
Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this

Daily Deviations: Behind the MagicHello all,
some of you may already be aware that a group of us CVs have gotten together and are planing a Daily Deviation projecteducate week in mid August.  The thought was that there is often so much negativity surrounding DDs and we'd like to help educate the community as best as we can to help settle some of the hurt feelings etc.  This is where we need your input!
Have your voice heard
This is your chance to have your voice heard.  We want to know what it is that you want us to talk about during DD PE week.  What do you want to know in regards to DDs?  What do you feel the community will benefit from knowing about?  Any and all input is welcome, the more the merrier!

Your feedback will help shape DD PE week as we will take into consideration all comments left for us and do our best to address your questions/problems/concerns, or anything else you

We're looking for game players to come and join in our deviantART Birthday Event! In just a short while  3wyl and myself are hosting an interpretation of a British game show called Pointless. The idea of the game is that you  have to guess the least popular answer to a multiple answers question. You will be awarded points accordingly, those with the most points will win - but you will have used pointless answers to get there!
We'll have pre-judged the least popular and most popular answers by asking a panel of CVs beforehand for their responses. Want an example?

Okay so Mission Impossible is a really high answer and if you said that one, you'd get lots of points. Which isn't good! If you said Rain Man - you'd possibly be getting less points. But if you said something like Endless Love or Taps, then you'd be hitting on an answer tha

PE Architecture: Perspective
Architecture Photography Basics: Perspective

Taking photographs is basically capturing a 3-dimensional space in two dimensions. The main principle governing this transformation is the principle of perspective, which represents the effect of a subject's space and depth in a 2-dimensional plane. The perspective effect in a photo is determined by the position it is taken from and the direction the camera is pointing. In other words, you can only change the perspective within an image by changing your standpoint.

'Godspeed' by Sigurd-Quast
Vanishing points play an important role in the portrayal of architectural forms. If parallel lines in 3-dimensional space extend into the distance, a photographic image will represent them as intersecting on a defined vanishing point. If you point your camera directly at the horizon, all vertical lines within the fram will actually appear vertical in your image. This is an
PE Architecture: Staircases
Architecture Photography Trends:  Staircases

The staircase is one of the most vital parts of a multi-story construction. The first step in the design of such a building is to find the perfect position of the staircase, the rest of the project would result from this as spaces will find their place around it.
Architecture photographers love staircases just as much as they give opportunities for stunning images with very intriguing visual effects. Check out these wonderful examples of staircases in Architecture Photography gallery!

Art History - Interview with SamuelRaffa:iconarthistoryproject: :iconcommunityrelations:
As part of Traditional Art History Month I will be interviewing some of  the Traditional Art Community, including your lovely TradART Community Volunteers :aww:
:star:
Today it's the surreal SRaffa, your Community Volunteer for Traditional Art

:iconSamuelRaffa:
Hi SRaffa, tell us a little about yourself and your style of Art.
I grew up loving comic books and album covers, and that's the art that's had the biggest influence on me. I went to art school, and pursued work as an illustrator as soon as I graduated; I didn't start doing personal work for myself until eight years after I graduated, and I'm still doing that. My style of art is largely about trying to visualize psychological and spiritual states in a way that makes them emotionally compelling.
What is it that attracts you to Traditional Art?
I work digitally in my job as a graphic
Art History: John William Waterhouse:iconarthistoryproject: :iconcommunityrelations:
A man of some mystery John William Waterhouse, most affectionately known throughout his lifetime as 'Nino" was born in Rome to his English parents William and Isabella during the wonder years of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood who set the art world alight.
It was his Italian beginnings that first influenced his artistic style as a young man first at school in Leeds, then later at his father's studio in London where he entered the coveted Royal Academy of Arts at the age of 21, not as a painter; but as a sculptor.  Six months later his probationary term ended and he was fully enrolled as a student leading to his first painting exhibits.

Traditional Tuesdays #34Howdy peeps? Welcome to the edition 34 of Traditional Tuesdays . This week, like all  of the other weeks, I'll be featuring fifteen works of art from the Traditional Gallery. Any more than that might and you might loss interest or it could cause your monitor to fail in an explosion of awesomeness.  I would feel guilty if that were to happen, so I'm keeping it at fifteen! The Traditional gallery is a vast storeroom of work that covers many mediums and genres. I've tried to show a good mix of artwork, but I don't have room for them all. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
**WARNING: Viewing these works of art may cause giddiness, elevated heart rates, and happiness in the pants(which could lead to blindness)! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!**

Leonardo da Vinci's Anatomical DrawingsIf getting your gear together and heading out for an evening of life drawing sounds like more trouble than it's worth, consider what Leonardo da Vinci endured for the sake of educating his own singular vision.
Rumors of da Vinci resorting to grave robbery persist to this day, but the truth is that he was allowed to dissect and study corpses at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence.
Leonardo da Vinci's studies of the human skull in 1489 borrowed three-dimensional drawing techniques from architecture that had never been seen applied to anatomical studies before. A new technical vocabulary for anatomical drawings was created and da Vinci's sketches in plan, section, elevation, and perspective marked a massive progression in how the body was documented.

Criticized for his undertaking, Leonardo passionately defended the purpo
Cave Paintings: The Birth of IllustrationCave paintings are the root of traditional illustration, one the earliest of which has been in recent news, a 'faint red dot' dated to more than 40,000 years ago. These were discovered in 11 caves in Spain, and results show that they are at least 15,000 years older than we first thought. It raises many questions; What are they trying to say? Who made it? Is it symbolic? Who was it made for?
No matter what the answers are, illustration is a means for people to convey information, a means of visual communication. The purpose of these cave paintings are unknown, and we can only speculate as to their actual purpose. A time well before printing press, but the value of visual communication has lasted through the ages. One thing that is for sure is it was some sort of communication via visual aids, they had a purpose and had something to say.

Design is intelligence made visible.

Printing: From the Far East to the Printing PressIllustrations have been hand drawn for many centuries. But as the demand for the distribution of illustration and text increased, people developed printing techniques, and over time this would turn into what we now know as the printing press, the mass production of illustration and text.
Let us take a look at the Far East first, in particular China and Japan where print has been traditionally used as early as the 7th century. The Chinese have been using woodblock printing since the Tang Dynasty (7th Century). This method of printing quickly spread to other East Asian countries, including Japan. The earliest complete survival of a dated printed book is the Diamond Sutra (Buddhist text). This of course ties into one of the most famous Chinese inventions, paper!

"It was the Chinese who really discovered the means of communication that was to dominate until our age."

A. Hyatt Mayor

Wood block printing was used in the production of books such as
