Utrecht devMEET postponed!Hello everybody! There's been a very important change of plans to the planned June 9 meeting in Utrecht. Because deviantART is hosting an official devMEET in Paris, France on the same day, we will be postponing the devMEET in Utrecht until further notice, as I will be traveling to Paris for it. We have not scheduled it for a later date yet, but if you want to host the devMEET in my honor, feel free to send me (itsfrits) a note and I will help you promote it on Nederlanders and answer any questions you might have about hosting a devMEET (it's really easy! :)).
No need to worry! The devMEET namenotrequired is hosting in Amsterdam on July 1 is still on! Visit his page for more information on that.
I apologize for any inconvenience. Hopefully someone is willing and able to host a Utrecht meet on June 9!

Many people would like to make use of the Premium Membership features of dA, but of course not everyone is able to reserve some bucks for this, or to use them online. Thankfully, deviantART has a wonderful community where many people are willing to help each other out. One way to get a Premium Membership eventhough you cannot pay, is to participate in contests where you can win premium memberships, or points to pay for them - this list will hopefully help you find some to enter. :eager:

First of all, I hope you all had a splendid week. There were some exciting new changes on dA this week. The one that most of you should be already aware of are username changes. The deviantART community as a whole seem to be split on whether it's beneficial to the community. I'd really love to hear what you think about it all. :)

May Contest: Navigating deviantART:new: The contest deadline has been extended to June 10th! There will be no further extensions, so get your entries in ASAP!

It's a common complaint...
Particularly for our newer members. "I've set up my profile...now where do I go?"
May's contest aims to answer that question. Your challenge is to create a tutorial aimed at deviantART's new members that shows them as much of the site as possible. Think about when you were new - what areas of the site did you discover only after blundering around? What areas did someone else point out to you? What do you wish you had known as a new member that seems like common knowledge now?
The Rules

dA Solutions Sanctuary 2012The Complaint Challenge - A Year Long Endeavor
People complain about a lot of things on deviantART. Some of those complaints are perfectly legitimate, some not so much. There are a lot of issues that can be solved with a simple search through dA's FAQ directory. Problems that can't be solved that way can be sent to the Help Desk.
But sometimes people complain about stuff that's not so simple. People complain that the quality of Daily Deviations is going downhill. They complain that Community Volunteers are impersonal or inaccessible. They complain that Critique doesn't happen often enough or that when it does, there's no quality to it. They complain about the fragmentation of _________ Community and how when they joined, things were so much better.
My submission to thorns Complaint Challenge is go

We've all heard it, maybe we've even said it ourselves? And for those who haven't, here it is: "mutts are healthier than purebreds." They're not inbred, overbred, bred without consideration to genetic defects…right? It's the biggest argument many people use for adopting shelter dogs rather than buying from a breeder, but is this idea really true? In actuality, it couldn't be further from the truth, because mut

"When is the best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. The second best time? Today."
- Chinese proverb
2014: This is the 3rd year of the project. There are many people supporting it, featuring it in their journal and offering art. BUT... There have been NO trees planted for it in the last year (I don't count mine). So, instead of talking about it, how about getting up and actually planting a tree, if you are able to? There is a lot of wonderful art waiting for you as a reward!
Trees are important, valuable and necessary to our very existence. It's not too hard to believe that, without trees we humans would not exist on this beautiful planet. Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. To grow tall the tree has become a miracle of engineering and a complex chemical factory. It is able to take water and

I live in a very small, rural, low income area.
Every year the (tiny) school here does Operation Backpack.
This is a program that gives underprivileged students the materials
they need in school to succeed.
Operation Backpack provides children with school supplies
(pencils, paper etc.), backpacks, basic health screenings
(eyes, spine, height & weight) and pretty much anything else
school related that they have enough funds for. Last year a local church
donated gift cards to Payless shoe stores and each child
at the program received a much-needed new pair of shoes. :)
Operation Backpack also helps throughout the year with another HUGE
problem in this area. Shortages in our local food bank. Teachers discreetly
put packaged, child-friendly foods into low income children's backpacks while
they are at recess on Frida

Project Plushie needs YOUR SUPPORTI bet you're wondering why I've written this News Article. Well, the reason, simply put, is this:

Now, you're probably wondering why I put a picture of my Cute Monsters contest entry in a news article. The simple fact of it is that if I win, I'll use some of the prize money to buy stuffed toys for underprivileged children for Christmas. I will buy 10 Fella plushies and 10 Super Llama plushies to give to Toys for Tots for Christmas, and that's where I need your help. Obviously I can't vote for myself, and I'm trying to raise the money (via :points: ) to buy the plushies. If I don't get enough points by Christmas, and if I win the shirt competition, I'll buy the necessary amount of points left to buy the plushies. So if you want to do a kind deed, vote for my entry, donate points to me, or both. If you don't do either, I'll send the poor kids to you and then you can explain why they don't have a single toy under their tree on Christm

How else can you help besides donating?
To further help the cause, please favourite this news article and feature it in your next journal, poll, and send it to your friends! It will really mean a lot to the future recipients and myself. It doesn't matter how many watchers you have, but I need your help for this to be known to everyone site-wide!

UPDATES CONT. - Warm Winter Project: 2012UPDATE 9 - As of Sunday, November 25, 2012, I WAS ABLE TO MEET AND PURCHASE MY DONATION GOAL OF 50 HOODIES thanks to deviantART's 30% off Black Friday sale as well as my 10% Premium Member Discount. Congratulations to us and thank you to everyone who helped out!
UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

Commissions Corner

Commission rates (Status:OPEN)
I am an advanced level designer and coder of deviantART CSS skins. I am open to any kind of coding/designing of skins.
My specialization is in creating sophisticated skins both in terms of functionality and design.
Though I am open for any kind of CSS designing and coding, I am fond of designing/coding modern style skins most of the time.

My Daily Deviations
Journal Skin (Coding)
I can code your journal skin if you have got a design made by yourself or from others.
A journal skin design has to have all the necessary elements that are present in a journal skin. You need to provide me a .PSD file for coding a design with all the elements organized in layers. You need to tell me the font names that you want to use from Google fonts as well.

EDIT: I revised my traditional commissions prices too, lowering them slightly as I did for digital commissions and simplifying them a bit to further shorten the journal. :)
I revised my digital commissions prices (lowering some of them a little) to simplify the journal, which was becoming too long. :faint:
That said, since I'm in a One Piece mode I'll offer a discount on the normal price for the first three people who will commission me OP fanarts, even if fan-characters! However, said discount will only apply on drawings (either digital or traditional) and not on fanfictions or crafts. Only two slots left!

Just a fast update to let you know that I revised my literature commissions fees in order to simplify them a little... I hope they are easier to understand now, but feel free to ask me questions if you are still confused! ^^

Hello:icondragonhi:,
NO, there's NO WAY I'll use the new DA commission widget-_- if you paid me 100p for a premium download content, I would get 1$, but if you paid me 100p for a commission with the DA commission widget, I would get 0,80$. So: NO WAY I agree for such a mugging. And it's you who would loose on it because I would like to earn this 1$ anyway, so you would have to pay me 120p. And if we now think about me earning e.g. 100$ it hurts doesn't it? So: NO-NO. I'm not such a badass to choose such a thing if I have a better choice;]

What information do you need for a commission or trade?
I need:

A bit of Help + All on the tableEdit: I saw MasterMindMan's Letters to Jane Doe project and wrote in. He ended up giving me a featured article, which is absolutely touching. I ask anyone who has had a less than perfect life to go read (or anyone who is curious). But I also ask you guys not to treat me any differently; aside from the anxiety, the depression and the homosexuality (which to me is not an issue lol), everything in there is a good 5-10 years in the past. Things are far from perfect but they have gotten better, which is the only point I was aiming for. And that I am willing to listen and help if I can. But yeah, I'm rambling. Here's the article http://news.deviantart.com/article/142304/ /edit
My finances for university finally got sorted out, and I am short a ton of money for tuition. I am job hunting, but so far it isn't getting many results. So anything extra would be greatly appreciated.&

Testing new Deviant-ID Custom backgroundOK, before you read this journal. Just visit my profile CypherVisor and have a look at the deviant-ID widget in my page and come back to read this journal again.
I assume that now you've gone through the deviant-ID widget in my page. So, how's it? Custom background is working with the new deviant-ID box of DA huh? :D You probably had used this tutorial (below) of mine earlier for the old deviant-ID box. But unfortunately the code for that is not working with the new one anymore.

You might be excited to have this new tutorial for the deviant-ID box but there are some big problems associated with this.
1) You can't change the font colors (as for any custom box widget). May people asks me this ques that, "How can we change the font color after using the custom backgrounds?". The answer is pretty straight, you simply can't! because DA has disabled the font color attribute!
2) The tutorial shall involve precise background size to be
Need Group Mods and Proboards Coders/DesignersYoutube | FormSpring | All Equine Roleplay
I am looking for people to help me moderate some of my Groups. This is because I would like to start working on my own artwork/stories for a change. I also feel like if the upkeep was handled mostly by mods, I could focus on other Group things that need to be done, like (re)writing rules, tweaking layouts, doing overhauls, and other Group activities that are generally the responsibility of the Founder. Nothing that needs to be done at any of my Groups is above me though, so I will also be doing the jobs I'm asking my moderators to do if I get to them first.
I have a lot of Groups (with ideas for more), however, I am not going to make more Groups any time soon, so don't get excited about that. The Groups I already have up and running need to be well-oiled, smooth

Contest: Theme, Prizes and Rules.Theme
The theme of the contest is "Family".
"A Family in harmony will prosper in everything."
 Chinese Proverb
On wikipedia, we can find this definition: "... a Family is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence.
In AllArtSupport we like to think that we are a family too. A family is about more than being related; is about being there when one needs you, is about feeling good only thinking about the ones you Care of.
This time, the contest we're holding has a deep meaning because many around us, possibly even us, sometimes forget what "Family" truly means or how important it is and we'd really like to make you all think more about it. This is all about reminding and celebrating the Family values.

What do you wish you had known as a new member that seems like common knowledge now?

dA Life #08: Hosting a Contest on dAWelcome to the eighth dA Life blog, a series created to help you enjoy your time on dA and use it's many tools for sharing your art, appreciating other people's art and taking part in the wonderful community that we have here.
Hosting a contest on dA is a really fun way to inspire other artists and do something positive for the community. If you've never run a contest before, it can seem like a daunting task so to make it a little easier, here are some things to consider before you create your contest and open it to the deviant public...
Theme
Your contest should have a theme. It can be as vague (Aliens, Summer, Cats) or as specific as you like (Alien Cats in Summer). When choosing your theme, take time to consider it's appeal to your potential entrants. A less specific theme is likely to attact more people as the scope for entries is wider. It depends on whether or not you want your contest to be huge - sometimes, bigger isn't always bet

Demonstrably Deviant: Issue VAbout
Sometimes we meet members of DeviantART who are just plain cool. They leave critique, they make great art or write great stories, they participate in groups and are generally just active and fun to be around. They also don't get any attention because being cool means you don't need attention to keep being cool. This interview series is meant to give all of you a small glimpse into the minds of these demonstrably deviant members. Twice monthly, I'll interview one of these deviants and feature work from their gallery. If you'd like to see someone interviewed for this series, just shoot me a note :note: with the subject "Demonstrably Deviant".

How did you first discover deviantART?
:tea: Well, starting researching the internet early January 2008, for a place to host my new business of Tea Photography. dA was the first place I looked at, and while I continued looked into several art-related internet sites, by March 9th, 2008, I came back to dA and signed up as an official member, and over 4 years later…
well, I've never left!
What was it about dA that made you want to stay?
:tea: Gosh, lots of really awesome reasons, since it's such an awesome place to be!
But, while I may have been shy about the idea of sharing my art, writing, & photography for the first time ever on the internet when I first came here, what has kept me here over and over, time and again, has been the overwhelming amount of support and encouragement I have received. :aww:
Additionally, to view the works of others, has been a feast f

interview a deviant who is regular in the dAmn/Chatroom area of
deviantART, and ask them to share their initial and current opinions on
that area of the site. Since this is a new series I'd love some

1. When did you start using dAmn compared to how long you've been on dA?
I've been on deviantART for a little more than 2 and a half years. I found dAmn about 9 months after I joined dA and first joined :#devart:. For the first 2 or 3 days I hung out there, or mainly observed there as I couldn't hold a conversation with anybody and started spamming with :iconstickmandancingplz: memes and broke a few rules... I believe I first used dAmn sometime around July 2009, about a year after making my account. So I've known about it for the majority of my time here on dA.
2. Which chatrooms do you usually hang out in? Any rooms you'd recommend do others?
:#WeEmote: used to a brilliant place back in the good ol' days. It's a real shame it died down. So I recommend there. If anyone has played the game 'Mafia' or 'Werewolves' you can play a dAmn version in :#dAmnW

Groups Needing Administration Assistance

dACipher is in search of...You.
:icondACipher: is in search of people like you to help us and your community by volunteering as Heads (Co-Founders) and Contributors to help construct lessons and teach members techniques regarding the chosen media.
We are ALSO looking for Moderators to assist in promotion, chat moderation and as an option to assist as a Translator.

If you don't know about dACipher, or you've never heard of us before, feel free to check out our "About Us", our "Welcome Blog" and our blog "Heads, Contributors and Moderators Defined"
This is a great opportunity for an artist to get involved with the community; promoting socialization and positivity.

Rules: Commenter Guidelines:star: Commenters: Who are them, and what they do. :star:
Commenters are the equivalent of moderators and contributors, as part of our group you'll have to be on DA regularly, we don't want a full dedication, but the project have big ambition so we need people who access and is active several days of the week.
So before signing your interest with a contributor request please be sure you can guarantee a certain amount of time to be an active commenter, what you'll have to do is:
:pointr: Give Feedback
This is the main activity of a commenter of course, you'll have to check the deviation submitted to the group and give the constructive feedback to those under your galleries, and then accept them so other people of the group can comment too.
:pointr: Look for Member to Feature
While managing your galleries you'll see how active people are, so if you notice someone feature worthy just notice to the group, so we can make the montly journal, or maybe ask to be
Contributor+Co-Founder needed!Dear Members,
our group has reached 840+ members and I realize that the current number of admins is not enough. :iconsighsignplz:
We're in desperate need of one Contributor and one Co-Founder.
If you are interested please, send a note to TheAppleScientist (me) telling why you are interested and if you have enough time (like 10-15 minutes a day) in order to vote for the incoming deviations. You must also be willing to re-read the rules carefully and act according to them.
I'll be waiting for your notes. :aww:
Have a nice day,
Daphne
P.S. I will announce the new admins at the end of May. I will judge from the notes, but also from your favourites gallery (I want to see what kind of art you like...) .
Let's get this party started!I've kind of been just letting this group sit around and collect dust and new members. 8D
HELLO EVERYBODY WHO JOINED IN THE LAST LIKE, 10 MONTHS.
It's time to set things in a bit more motion and shake off the dust.
First order of business, it really would be awesome to have more people join me on the admin team. The more people willling to help = more fun stuff we get to do with the group. I'd really like to do contests and features and such but I can't do it all alone. xD
If you want to be a co-founder or a contributer, just drop a comment saying so. I'll just take a quick look to make sure you log in more than once in a blue moon and then promote you into a position of POWER.
I have a large amount of faith in giving admin powers to a bunch of strangers and having magical things happen as the group works together. In my experience, group administration works just like that!
So don't be shy. |D
Second order of business, I used to actively seek out cool stamps to add to this group. xD I

:bulletorange: :new: :new: Thank you! We have enough applications for now ! :)
We need more contributors for the Gallery, so do you have what it takes ? ;)
:groups: We need:
2 contributors to accept/decline submissions to the gallery.
(More info. will be given when you apply)
If you are interested or if you have any questions, please send uae4u a note!
:groups: What to mention in the note:
Your experience in dA's groups.
The reason you want to help us.
How much time you can dedicate for the group.
Whether or not you are available this summer.
The group's staff can submit 1 deviation per week, and they can receive free premium memberships if they stay long in the group and if they do their jobs efficiently ! ;)
Good Luck! :w00t:

Group Staff OpportunitiesAs some of you may have noticed, PhotographLove is running on a little bit of a lack of staff at the moment. Without the required staff members, it is hard to run all the aspects of a large group with just 2-3 people. So below, we have arranged a list of open staff opportunities.
**To apply for any job, note the group with the subject titled "JOB", then describe what job you want, why you would be good for the position, reasonings, etc.
*"Jobs" do not pay unless otherwise stated.
Opportunities & Jobs
:bulletorange:Gallery Moderator
The Gallery Moderator is to moderate all of the deviations being submitted into the Gallery and remove ones that do not belong. As simple as that :) We are looking for multiple users to take this position.
:bulletblue:General Moderator
This job has all the same responsibilities as the Gallery Moderator, but will be in charge of keeping the group "up to date" too - meaning socializing with our members, accepting/declining submissions

The Known and Unknown Feature [3]This collection is one that I hope you all will enjoy, I know I really did!
Also, I just finished the last episode of House M.D. Likely one of my favorite shows... So sad to see it end.
Also, a must see: http://vimeo.com/42785517 One of the most gorgeous videos I have seen.
Have a great week!
P.S. Steph1254, Pickley and JamminJo Just saying.
P.P.S. Sta.sh shows this centered, but it isn't staying centered... So my apologies for the crappy alignment.

Spotlight Features - Volume 1A new series that will feature art selected by me. There will be a wide range of themes and genres covered. In addition, there will be periodic interviews and artist spotlights. This article will be also be the home of my upcoming "Awesome dA Artist" feature, which is a re-birth/re-imagining of my "Awesome Emoticonist" award.
Daily Features
On my profile page, I feature a new deviation every day (or two or three). The piece is usually something that caught my eye. Could be an amazing digital painting, a fun stamp, a quick photograph that made me smile, perhaps a piece for a weekly theme, whatever. However, it moved me enough to share it with my visitors. Below is a list of the artists which I featured during December 2011. I am showcasing different pieces from their gallery in the hope of showing them a bit more love. If you would like to see the original piece I featured of each of these artists, please

IntrovertedBy accident i found an deviation about how to interact with introverts. It reminded me of a journal that i posted nearly exactly a year ago. Additionally i had a conversation with the daughter of my neighbour yesterday, among other things we talked about how much i have changed during the years and how "horrible" i have been.
Because of that and because i think that it can be good to remind others of what it really means to be introverted i thought i share that journal, the deviation and a link with "10 myth about introverts" with you again.
This might be nothing new for some of you, but i think there are still enough people who aren't fully aware of how to deal with 'us'. Personally i am not making a big drama of it, but i know that i am difficult to handle and get along with. But i never have been different

The biggest game of TAG ever!vampirevampire tagged me! And it seems like this thing has really been making the rounds. I don't often do these things, but I thought I'd give this one a go.
Here are the rules:
1. You must post the rules.
2. Each person must post 5 things about themselves in their journal
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and create eleven new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4. You have to choose 11 people to tag and post their icons on your journal.
5. Go to their page and tell them you have tagged them.
6. No tag backs.
7. No stuff in the tagging section about "You're tagged if you're reading this." You legitimately have to tag 11 people.
5 Things about Me
1. I'm a full-time writer now for a business consulting firm and I'm loving every second of it!
2. I sent something in for publication just two days ago to a Business Strategy magazine. If I get chosen, it will be published on July 1, 2012. It would be my second time published, so I'm ver
One Hell of a MonthHey Guys!
My gosh! It has been one hell of a month! In the past week a lot has happened, the least of which was my computer needing a new backlight and LCD panel (Thank you Apple for this Free of Charge!) and so much more on a personal educational level as well. More on that once I know more
Anyway the point of this journal was to be short... But I wanted to really extend a thank you to everyone that has watched, congratulated, supported, and just been there this last month. The deviousness award was a huge shocker and really got me through this last month of school and change... A special thanks to Fiona, fourteenthstar, for presenting the award
As a show of my gratitude, I have dedicated this photo to all of you.

 I love you guys

Thank you all for your support, I am so glad that this was completed with such great support. Thank you to everyone.
:new: Please fave and comment on this journal to help others see it!
I almost never buy "extra" things, for me this includes items like points :points: from deviantART. However, that has changed as of today.
Earlier this year, ToxicAlice92 announced a project
On my profile, in the top right, there's a donation pool. I want to spend the entire year raising up enough points to buy 50 Vertical Zip hoodies to donate to the nearest homeless shelter at the end of the year next year. But that wasn't it!
UPDATE 2 - I also received a note from Heidi earlier today (1.4.12) letting me know that deviantART would like to match my donations on their behalf!! That means when I reach my goal of 50, I will be receiving 50 more

This person also needs help! o3oUpdate:
A friend: mrmojoman0 also needs help.. An unfortunate situation came about where he is in need of financial help, else he would be homeless.. He is offering commissions starting at $10-$15. His prices are very reasonable for the quality of artwork he has.. Please if you are interested, please help him out! More information in his forum thread: http://forum.deviantart.com/jobs/services/1738884/

Hello everyone!
I just recently came by someone by the name of kuuneho on deviantART who has been a member for just two months and already shown some great ability in the artwork they draw! I promised to them that I would help them out a little by featuring them and promoting their 30 free art requests to help them become known. I think they deserve it. :meow:
Check out their work:

I like the answer from another interview... my soul.
:bulletyellow: How did you found out about deviantART and why did you join the community?
I can't really remember the very first time I found out about dA, yet a friend of mine said I should join and I did, I wasn't active for like two years I think. I joined because...
10 Years on deviantART!So like, woahhhh. 10 years. Crazy. How did time pass by so fast?
It doesn't really exactly feel like that long ago when I first started visiting dA and now it's already been a decade.
So kinda for myself (and also anyone possibly interested) here's a journal post recapping my last 10 years~ (Also sort of my journal in photography too, I guess.) :D
May 17 2002
I signed up on dA when someone in the drawing group I hung out with told me to check out his works here. I was only 14 then. I didn't use dA a lot at the time because it looked like this: http://web.archive.org/web/20030426063919/http://www.deviantart.com/
I was on a 15" 1024x768 display and the ad banner + dA header took up half my screen on every page load. Did not like. >_>
Sept 2003
I dropped by dA every now and then, in Sept I suddenly found it a lot more user-friendly, the new version: http://web.archive.org/web/20030922013355/http://www.deviantart.com/

Any more than that might cause your monitor to fail in an explosion of awesomeness, and I wouldn't want that to happen! The Traditional gallery is vast storeroom of work that covers many mediums and genres. I've tried to show a good mix of artwork, but I don't have room for them all. Make a Difference #159Artists join deviantART to share their art and appreciate others. Due to the many artists out there, it’s easy to get towed under and generally obscured from the public.
Make a Difference aims to do exactly that. This series of articles will hopefully make a difference to you as well as the artists featured weekly. Just by giving one minute of your time to write constructive comments, favourites and even watches will make a difference to these artists.

1) First off LiliWrites, can you tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Lili and I live in North Carolina. I have been on deviantART for about 6 years now (previously as KneelingGlory) and have grown a great deal as an artist in my time here. Most people find it curious that I am 6'3" tall, but don't particularly enjoy basketball. I'm a nerd at heart. :B
2) When did you first discover dAmn, and can you remember the first room you ever chatted in?
I think I first discovered it when someone I watched posted a poll inviting people to come join a chatroom. I don't recall what room it was, but I remember I discovered a very silly, fun, entertaining atmosphere that was unlike any o
A Deviant In NeedThere is something to be said about this community and that is, it is filled with the most amazing and supportive people I have ever come to know. You have reached out to me in time of need and helped my head keep above water when it was surely to sink. I am forever grateful to each and everyone of you. Things are still really up in the air and we're doing our best to get by but what some amazing deviants have offered already has really helped me. Truly and honestly.
A good and dear friend of mine, a fellow CV as well, is in some tough waters of her own. To the point she had to cancel her wedding because of money issues. She is a talented artist and is offering up prints and art to help pay for their coming bills due to loss of income and job. So if you/know someone who can help or at least spread the word anything helps <3

How They Did It: The Story Behind the Shot V3HTDI:TSBTS aims to guide emerging photographers by showcasing tips, techniques, and stories generously shared by some of dA's most accomplished Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature artists. At the same time, we hope to shed light on the often overlooked amount of effort that is required to create striking images like these. Making a great photograph takes time, planning, a creative eye, and solid photography skills. What happens behind the lens is just as important as the final product!
I am sure many of you have been told "Great photo! You must have an awesome camera!" or "Wow, you sure were lucky to get that shot!" While a "good camera" and "luck" are small ingredients when creating a visual feast, we photographers would like to remind everyone that technical competency, determination, patience, and creative vision are the real meat and potatoes of any tasty photo.

Twist It Up! Final:la: This is it! You've made it! One final lesson and you're off doing the Twist!
Aim: To learn that twists in a novel or story are based on assumptions. The deeper an assumption in the subconscious, the better the opportunity for the twist.
Subject: Source: Taken from "A Novel Idea" by various authors, pg 30. In a novel's opening scene, John and Lisa, a married couple, are in their kitchen. The scene is told from Lisa's point of view. The phone rings and Lisa answers. It's her OB-GYN, saying, "Congratulations! The test is positive - you're pregnant!" Lisa is thrilled. She and John have been trying for years to have a baby, and they've been anxiously awaiting this phone call. Lisa hangs up the phone, tells her husband the news (which he already apparently guesses, since he's heard her side of the conversation), and they fall into each other's arms and weep.
Talk: We've looked at making assumptions, then we twisted those assumptions in a few different angles

Literature CR News- May 2012Hello all! As you've probably guessed by the title of the journal and the Community Relations journal skin, this is the monthly update from the literature community volunteers. :)

Where credit is due.I need to say something.
A few months ago, dA launched Stash Writer. I'm not using the period, because I can't remember where it goes and nobody cares anyway.
When they launched it, it kinda sucked. For many reasons, which I won't go into here, because it's not important.
What's important is what happened then, and what happened since. I will enumerate the earth-shaking developments here:
1. Stash Writer happened at all.
2. They improved it since.
Now, in the short time I've been hanging around here, one of the most-repeated whines is that dA doesn't give a shit about writers or the Literature community. Trust me when I say that this notion is complete horseshit, for many reasons. Stash Writer stands as a testament to that, one testament among many. It took a hell of a lot of work, much more so than one would expect from a massive social media web site that presumably doesn't care about writers, and to be honest, doesn't need to.
Since dA launched Writer, there was a lot of bitching. I

The series of 5 articles about Street Photography made by myraincheck and slightly edited by moi* continues with:
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY…WITHOUT PEOPLE
First things first let's remember that street photography is not so much about the subjects as it is a style of photographing, a 'forma mentis', a way to think, see, capture images. A forma mentis that can be summed up in the ability of RE-INTERPRETING, RE-CONTEXTUALIZING, giving a different interpretation, placing in a different context, the reality around us, giving it an additional significant meaning.
Even if the classic structure of street photography is a meaningful interaction between human and surroundings, we can have street photos where the human element is not physically present. Sometimes it can be symbolized by other elements, sometimes it is completely absent. Let's show some examples:
SYMBOLIC HUMAN PRESENCE
The human element is not physically present, but t

DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give yo

Group Journal Comment Messages for Admins

Over the past few months, many members have been asking to bring back the feature where Group admins receive Message Center notifications when members comment on their Groups' journals. This week, we brought back this functionality and messages will now be appearing for all new comments.

Group journal messages will appear for all users who have administrative powers over that Group's journal. For example, if the "Contributors" admin class is set to 'Can

We've added two more share buttons to deviation pages! This was a popular request, both in comments from members here on deviantART as well as on deviantART's Google+ Page, and so we've be adding buttons that allow you to share on Google+ and Pinterest, in addition to the share tools that are already in place.

Announcing the deviantART Creative GrantsAnnouncing the deviantART Creative Grants
At deviantART, we have spent the past 11 years building a place where artists can share and discuss their work and get inspired by the work of their contemporaries. A noble cause, for certain, but we would like to be so much more to our beloved community of brilliant creatives. Starting today, deviantART will also be a means of inspiration in an entirely new way with financial support for art.
On 3 month cycles, deviantART will accept applications from artists seeking to fund art-related projects. A panel called the Creative Grants Board will pick those projects that they believe will benefit particularly from a Grant and give those artists the support they need to make it happen. The lucky few who are chosen to receive Grants will also be given a beautiful accolade on their deviantART Profile Page to celebrate their succes

The Muse AbidesAsk any artist about “emptiness” and they’ll tell you about the constant recurring nightmarish emptiness they must face down almost every day as a part of their vocation: the blank space that they must fill. New! Cubism Messenger Bag Design Challenge!
What comes to mind when you hear the name Pablo Picasso? That’s right, it’s time to break it down, Cubism-style! For the first time ever, we are hosting a Messenger Bag Design Challenge! We want you to create an original design for the flap of the bag in the style of Cubism.
For this challenge, we are defining Cubism as an art style in which instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from multiple viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often, the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create a shallow ambiguous space.
Your design should appear on the flap of the bag (below the zipper), using only <

The Fairy Tale, A Lifelong ResonanceA thousand years tradition of scaring children at bedtime continues for children of all ages. News of the discovery of 500 “new” fairy tales collected over 150 years ago [link] in Germany and locked away in a forgotten archive has me thinking about the enduring importance of these narrative treasures in the lives of human societies worldwide. My worry, have fairy tales been marginalized by modernism?

deviantART Community Relations

Acts of Random Kindness!Hi there, fellow deviants!
In this small introductory journal, I'd like to explain an idea for a project I'm expanding upon.
So stay put, it's going to be an interesting read, I promise!
:happybounce:
What are Acts of Random Kindness?
Acts of Random Projects, also known as ARKs is a project that was initially started by MzzAzn and builds upon the idea of "paying it forward".
Basically, each month you commit yourself to doing at least one or two (or more) random acts of kindness to spread positivity throughout the community.
This can be done by leaving small positive comments on pieces that haven't been commented on yet, by making art for someone, by giving points to donate towards someone's goal and in a various amount of other ways. The main idea is simply to do something constructive to make another person smile. It doesn't need to be a big gesture, it's the sentiment behind it that counts.
Why should I participate?
Besides the fac

Photography Trouble Shooting: LightingRecently during a projecteducate week focusing on Still Life Photography we asked for you to share the issues that you might have when trying to obtain some great Still Life Shots. Through this series of articles we hope to answer some of the queries or give you that push you need to step outside boundaries and get creative. The first frustration came from 1510 who struggled with Lighting additionally a further 19 Deviants voted on the poll to indicate they had the same issues.

"Lighting. I always have to use just window or lamps which are never
good. kind of given up on still life photos, even I have still tons of
ideas..." 1510

"1510 lamps and natural light are a perfectly good way of lighting a subject. Many 'professional' lighting solutions, particularly the ones that burn 'hot' or constantly, are not much more than high wattage incandescent light bulbs often with some sort of cooling (to prolong the lifespan of the bulb).
Why credit and notify?Hi all,
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.

What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t

a series of articles about the entire History of Art.

the Community itself.
:star: WHO IS COORDINATING THIS?
The Art History Project was devised by the Director of communityrelations, Moonbeam13.
Two of her Community Volunteer Mentors, DistortedSmile and ScENeYmE became the project leads and started collecting the articles.
DistortedSmile and her helpers deshrubber, alexandrasalas, Lyricanna and itsfrits are still collecting these articles and encouraging more and more involvement in the Project.

Fan Art & Celebrities Explained! This article is meant to explain the relationship between Fan Art, celebrities, and the characters they portray.
First and foremost:
Portraits, pictures, photographs, drawings, paintings, etc. of a celebrity themselves (not in character) are not Fan Art.
Any artwork you create, or photograph you take which is of a celebrity themselves, be it portrait, full body, or somewhere in between should always be uploaded into the proper corresponding gallery (digital, traditional, photography etc.) in the people/portraits category.

All of the above examples are not Fan Art, and reside in their respective galleries.
Furthermore artworks depicting rock stars, sport stars, etc. are also not considered to be Fan Art and should be uploaded into their rightful galleries under the people or portraits category.
So what about artworks or photographs that portray the celebrity as a character he/she has acted as or performed

projecteducate is a group and all updates from individuals during their weeks listed below will be posted over there! So be sure to join or watch for the full updates! If you want to partake in Community Week by writing an article then just note the group with your ideas!
How it Works
projecteducate started with purely CV run weeks. Those were weeks focusing on a specific art form brought to you by your lovely Community Volunteers. As well as these epic seven days of awesome, we've now introduced two more themes which run on a bi-monthly basis. Those are Community Weeks, which include articles from members of the dA community - and Artist Toolbox Weeks which include a mixture of articles focusing purely on the 'tools' of the trade. If you're interested in either please note projecteducate!

PE: Careers in Vector GraphicsWhere Can Vectors Take You?
Any vectorist will tell you that there is a lot of personal satisfaction in creating vector art. Because it's not the simplest of mediums to work with, most vector artists will take great pleasure in finishing a piece and being proud of their work, even in the beginner stages. Personally I also find great joy in watching other vector artists complete a piece, knowing how much work went into it.
But what else can vectors do for us?
If you decide to take your vector knowledge and skill into the workplace, there are many avenues and careers that Vector artists can embark upon.
Freelancing Being a Freelance Vector artist can take you in many directions, leaving your possibilities wide open to different opportunities. One week you might find yourself designing a logo or branding elements for a new company. The next week you might be designing a larger than life billboard. You might set your sights on

Your entry MUST:
1) Be a totally NEW piece, created especially for this contest, and must be reworked from a previous piece in your gallery. Pieces uploaded earlier than May 28, 2012 will be disqualified.
2) Be submitted to DomiSM via a NOTE with the Subject 'REVAMP CONTEST'. One note per entry, please do not submit multiple entries in one note. If I do not get a note from you with your entry into the contest, I won't know it exists, and it won't be judged as part of the contest.
3) Be 100% VECTOR! Please do not use raster (p
PE: Vectors...to Mix or Not to Mix?To Mix or not to Mix?
I often get asked questions regarding what is and what isn't allowed in a Vector piece to allow it to remain a Vector piece.
Sound confusing? Isn't a Vector piece always a Vector piece? The answer to this is 'NO!'
Let me explain by starting with the definition of a Vector: Although I've already posted ChewedKandi's definition of Vectors many times in my journals, I'll do so again now.
In digital art there are two layer formats: Raster and Vector. Raster formats are based in pixels and vector is based in paths and points.
When you resize a raster image, you are expanding the pixels. Your program has to try to estimate what the colours would be for the additional pixels
created. Due to this, the image loses it's clarity and creates a pixelated effect.
When you resize a vector image, you are increasing the distance between the points. Due to this, the image doesn't lose it's clarity and doesn't
pixelate.

PE: Getting Started With Vectors! So, you want to learn how to Vector?
Getting started with Vectors is simple, and SO much fun! You'll need a few basics, so let's make a checklist:
1) Willingness to learn? CHECK!
2) Creativity? CHECK!
3) Desire to be able to infinitely scale your work? CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!

Alrighty then, let's get down to some basics!
First thing you'll need is a Vector program or a program capable of Vectors. There are quite a few programs out there, but the most popular are Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape and
Project Educate: Vector Week IntroHello everyone, and welcome to Project Educate: Vector Week!! I'm DomiSM, and I'm in the Community Volunteer in charge of the Vector Categories on dA :D
This week I hope to bring a bit of light to help artists understand more about what Vectors are...and what they aren't. I also hope to bring some help to those who are interested in delving into the Vector medium, as well as hopefully giving the more experienced Vectorists some inspiration
So, without any further ado....
What is Vector Art?
